My girlfriend was homeschooled, and went to both private, Non-Denominational Christian and Public schools. She said to be sure to do it through an umbrella school because of the standardized testing and ease of getting materials to help the process. Some of her friends had trouble getting into public schools because of their home schooling wasn't considered accredited for some reason. Her umbrella school was Gateway Christian in Memphis, even though she lived in Nashville.

She said to be sure the children have other social interaction and preferably some time with kids their own age, too. Some of her relatives have a hard time in social situations because of their lack of time spent outside of the house.

If you want to PM me, GEL, I'll show it to her so she can respond to any questions you may have. God bless.

Really, a big part of the education process is learning to get along and work with people. I just don't see how throwing a workbook at a kid and telling them to fill out the blanks is the same thing as the education people get who interreact with others.

You can get a collage degree through correspondance courses, but it's not the same thing as going to classes, and socializing with others.

I agree with JohnR7. My parents are teachers, and they've seen again and again that homeschooled children don't have the same social advantages. Your kids are going to be living in the "real world" the rest of their lives, they may as well learn to deal with it. It can be such a great learning experience to interact with people on a daily basis that come from different backgrounds and beliefs, and just see the world differently.
I spent all my education in the public system and never once regretted it. I don't remember much about what I actually "learned", but I sure as heck know how to get along with others, and I know a lot about different cultures and religions. Somewhere in between all that socialization I managed to graduate high school with honours, get accepted into a prestigious university, and I'm graduating this month. Oh, and I did this along with all the teasing, bullying, bad teachers, discrimination, and all the other "interesting" stuff that comes with public education. All this stuff is part of life, and part of an education.
I hope this doesn't come across as too strong, I'm just really an advocate of sending kids to school for their formal education.

I am home schooled (9th grade this year), and I feel that it is the way to go for me. Now I would pray about where god wants you. I feel he wants me at home, and I feel that the lack of socialization "Problem" is non-existant. I have struggled with this at times, but I feel that home schooled is better. Its given me more priority on God as I head into the world when I turn 18. Thats how I feel. God doesn't want everyone home schooled, so you really need to pray about it, and I'll be praying for you. God bless!

Hi GEL.......

The one theme I read a few times is PRAYER - thats exactly what My wife and I did before deciding to home school.. We really felt lead to do this - we live in an area that had the worse high school in the state - also it is and was a transient school - Its close to a Military Base that uses it for the Military High School - We have never regretted home schooling and the girls NEVER regretted a moment..

The girls both -played soccer year round so they have plenty of outside interaction - as well as attending youth group on Friday nights - Sunday School - Church and evening worship on Sundays - and Youth on mission on Wed...
My oldest turned 16 in Dec. and she is graduating with Honors ( 4.0 GPA ) - she scored high on the SATS - she was tested in 7th or 8th grade and scored in the college levels - and she applied herself to win 3 scholarships for College that she starts in Sept. to be a Reading Specialist.. sending yor child ot public schooling or private schooling has its pro's and con's as well as home schooling.. NOT everyone is suited to be homeschooled as much as not every parent is equiped for it..

PRAY - and also - join a school group.. We joined a local home school group - they group many families together and the groups ( at least ours ) plan field trips - a yearly talent show among other things.. The group we belong to is recognised by many colleges..

tale care GEL - I know God will lead you to do what is best for your children..

For those opposed to Home schooling. Do you really think these kids are "locked" in closets and given a workbook to fill out? Oh there is soooo much more to homeschooling than you think! You can create your own workbooks. You are free to educate your children they way then NEED to be educated instead of having a teacher that thinkgs she/he know how your child learns beter than you!
I am going to a play group on the 6th. There are over 300 families in my area alone...not including the 5 other areas in the city! To me that sounds like a big group to be socializing with!
Ill let you know what happens!

I'm not opposed to homeschooling under the right circumstances. I've also given it a lot of thought over the years.
If you do decide to send your children to school it's very important to be INVOLVED. Become the Classroom Parent. Don't just join the PTA but be involved with it. Start a Girl Scout Troop. Go on all the field trips. Volunteer in the school library. Become one of those parents that are always around. (I realize that not all parents can do this)

My children range from 7 to 24 years old and what I've noticed over the years is children who's parents are involved in the learning process do better in school.

If you decide to homeschool more power to you!

We homeschooled all 4 of our children back in the 80s and 90s. Today they are all very successful. They all went on to college, been on the Deans and Presidents lists, and are happy, well balanced individuals.
I am very happy and proud of them.

Home schooling is not for everybody. You have to have the correct motivations and a certain amount of ability to teach and communicate with the kids.

Do not do it if you are just upset with the poor performance of the public schools or if you are just upset about school prayer. You must be commited and willing to put in the 4-6 hours a day actually teaching and working with them.

I had to take a weekend job and teach math and science while the wife taught english and social studies.

I personally have not homeschooled because I do not have any children, but I have been in contact with many home schooled children.

Two family's I''m very close have home schooled their children.  My best friend who has 6 children home schooled the first 3 up to HS and then they wanted to go to public school so she let them.   They all are extremely bright and the 2 oldest have started the family business here in Florida while the parents keep it going in TN.  They all are well adjusted.

The other family has 2 daughters and both are extremely intelligent and social.  They don't have a problem getting along with others as far as I can see.

I think it's a great idea under the right circumstances.  Just get as much info as possible and then wait on the Lord to give you ideas to add to it.  Both familys made learning time a family event.  They always seem to have so much fun together.

Also, I've noticed, no teenage rebellion in either family.  ]

According to what I've seen I'm all for it.
