Most Americans don't think they have an accent, but if you've ever traveled around the country, you'll hear different accents in every corner of the USA.

We've got Southern drawls, Midwestern twangs, the hard to even describe Boston accent and countless others. And all of these accents have their nuances and differences, state-by-state, even by towns and neighborhoods.

How do you sound? Do you have the same accent as your neighbors, or are you holding on to an accent from where you grew up or went to school?

Quiz here: What American accent do you have?

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

I'm a Missourian living in PA so it was reasonably accurate for me though I know plenty of Ozark hillbillies and PA Dutch Mennonites that would test differently ;)

85% Northeast.
80% Midland
73% South

This apparently makes me as Philadelphian as a cheesteak. Very strange. I've only been there once for a few days. I always think of Philly as thick and nasal--like Rocky:

"I just wanna say hi to my girlfrien'...Yo, Adrian, it's me...Rocky!"

The other 2 are probably right. Because I was born and grew up in the South, but have lived in the Midwest for almost 40 years.

Bah, it put me in the midland and gave me little compatibility to the northeast - where I am from.

North Central + The West.

I guess that makes sense.

The locals here have actually called me out for rhyming bag with vague. Isn't that how you're supposed to say it? At least I don't rhyme almond with salmon you farm boys

That seems to be a simplification of this test: Dialect Quiz & Survey

This test does a batter of job of placing you in the country. I got Philadelphia from the link in the OP, but my result with the Dialect Quiz placed me in the city I grew up next to. I think the interactive maps are the best part.

There is no way that's accurate. It says my husband has no accent, or a Western one. This man says "winder" instead of "window" and "rastlin" instead of "wrestling". I demand a re-test!

Well correct term for the professional version is rastlin or wraslin (with the w almost silent. wrestling is reserved for the legitimate athletic contest.

I thinks I have a Philadelphia accent!

That is stranger that strange.

But then I answered the words sound different when there is just a slight difference. I'm betting that if I were to go back and decide slight difference means words sound the same my answer would be totally different.

And heck, being a native Angelino I can think of 4 markedly different accents from just my city.

And not a single question to determine Irish heritage. (If third and turd sound similar).

I got "The Midland" on the quiz, but that's because I like to try to pronounce words clearly, if I can. I talk to people on a regular basis who would have more trouble understanding me if I always spoke in a regional dialect.

In real life, I have a Southern accent. My Rs are strongly pronounced, and sometimes even intrusive. I think it's my biggest problem with Swedish pronunciation, since one has to roll Rs in Swedish. Most Americans will have trouble with it, but it's even worse for Southerners, I think.

Also, I pronounce my I as "ah." I can't remember what linguists nicknamed it. "Confederate A" or something like that.
