Grackles are related to crows. They're just a little bigger than a robin. They have a greenish or purple sheen when the light hits them right. They are not the same thing as a starling, but grackles and starlings look a lot alike. Starlings don't have the sheen, they're just dull dark gray. Grackles are native American birds, starlings were imported. Grackles migrate, starlings don't. Grackles have longer tails. One has a black beak, the other has yellow, but I don't remember which is which. They do tend to be a bit messy, especially if they visit your birdfeeder, but they aren't really a nuisance.
