I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Do I have to? Librarian or work in a plant nursery, maybe. The other day, my son asked me, "Mommy, when I'm done being a little boy, can I be a squirrel?"

(What am I doing up at 3 AM? Shift work--my turn for the midnight shift this week.)

Well, I'm a bit past growing up, now all I do is grow out

I regret not having gone to college. I guess the one thing that I would have loved to do is mechanical engineering. I seem to have been given limited gifts in that area. I love making things. The one job I've had that I really loved was being a heavy truck mechanic. I had to give that up because of arthritus and back injuries. I miss the work, but I don't miss smelling like a truck.

Being a singer was my early age dream, but you should all be thankful that I didn't do that, as my voice is not all that great

I used to do portraits of pets and people when my daughter was younger, but I was always too nice and offered discounts, so I never made money doing it!

I work in pencil, charcoal, watercolor, oils and pastels.

Or more accurately... I would like to have written. *grins* It's the discipline of actually doing it that I've lacked.

I want to write children's books someday and illustrate them as well, but I only have ONE story in mind and it goes with photos and not illustrations...and I'm too lazy to work on it. *sigh*

I want to be a (published) writer.

Right now I'm a scientific editor/writer/layout person and while I enjoy that and it's almost a dream job, I'd love to write full time...

On those who think writing may be the field for them. It is a full-time job. My wife is now on her fourth romance novel. She has 2 that will be published by cerridwin press by the end of this year. She is working with an agent to get the 3rd one published by a bigger publisher and is working on her fourth. She writes approximately 20+ pages per day which approximates to 8 hours or more depending on the other errands she has which include carpooling the kids to and from school and maybe working out at the gym at the Seminary.

The job won't pay until the books are published. Instead of an advance she will receive approximately 40% of sales from ebooks and if the sales are good she will see the book be published for sales in stores.

She also belongs to the Romance Writers of America (RWA) The Midwest Fiction Writers (MFW) and both the Wisconsin and Indiana writers groups in which she attends monthly meetings and will be attending the Wisconsin convention in June and the National conference in Dallas in July. She is very busy and she doesn't have another job to help out with finances. We are living solely on School grants and loans.

It's just I've done what I've been doing so long, and it pays pretty well, though we can afford for me to take a paycut. It's such a risk. Part of me still wants to get into teaching.

I graduated high school in three years then went to a two year college... for three years. Wasn't put on AP because I withdrew my third semester. (Girlfriend at home and tooooo much partying was my downfall.) But when I went back the next year I made the Dean's list.

But it wasn't until I was 38 that I finally learned that an AAS degree isn't worth the paper it's written on, except to go towards a Bachelor's degree, which I needed to enter seminary. It's tough getting back into the acedemic mode once you've been out for nearly 20 years.

It's one of those things, where in the middle of the sinning, there was some really fun times, and both those fun times and learning from your sins have made you the person you are today - however, it would have been just so much easier in the long run to have put off some of those good times until the degree.

I got my BA through a non-traditional program through CUW, and in my late 20s, I was one of the youngest in the group. One of my favorite classmates was my mom's age by a few days.

I remember watching their struggles to balance going back to school after so many years, their studies, and their families. All I know is that the experience actually strengthened my marriage because I kept thanking God every day for a husband who was 110% behind me (he gave us a trip to Jamaica for my graduation present). I saw more than a couple people drop out of the program because some spouses and families couldn't handle the time needed for studying. It was quite disturbing. I couldn't get that. How can someone have a problem with their spouse trying to better themselves? It was just a 2 year program (give or take, I did it in 18 months), not like the rest of their lives.

At the same time, there were single parents with small children, or brand new parents, and they got through it with flying colors. I couldn't imagine doing it with children, especially small children. I really admired them.

The Pope, Billy Graham, and Oral Roberts were in a three-way plane crash over the Pacific Ocean. They all died and went to heaven together.

"Oh, this is terrible," exclaims St. Peter, "I know you guys think we summoned you here, but this is just one of those coincidences that happen. Since we weren't expecting you, your quarters just aren't ready... We can't take you in and we can't send you back...."

My BS was through an adult degree completion program (remind me sometime to tell you about how I got into seminary... the Spirit at work!) through a local Weslyan College. One night per week for four hours plus a LOT of home work and projects... in 18 months.

And I did it raising three kids by myself. I have a whole new perspective on how single mothers (even married ones!) can juggle raising kids, keeping a home, having a fulltime job, and studying for a degree all at the same time. Some think that men don't get it, but this one sure does!

...and then pack everything up for a full-time seminary formation program and masters level study. I don't know how I survived!

hmmm...sounds like my bio. An Assoc degree wasn't enough but a pregnant girlfriend and too much partying ended that. Shotgun wedding finalized the whole thing.

I did marry the GF after college (no shotgun necessary) but three kids and 7 years later, she decided that being a wife and mother just wasn't her bag.

Mind if I jump in with what I wanted to be when I grew up?
I wanted to join the Navy, like my uncle, or I wanted to be a singer, but I got married at 18 instead, to the boy I started dating when I was 15 .
26 1/2 years later...here we are, still walking through life together . Our babies are now 24 & 22.

I was accepted into nursing school about 17 years ago, but could not attend because of depression/anxiety problems. All my friends graduated from college. I've always felt kind of bad that I didn't.

Please don't say...but you still could. No I can't, it wasn't meant to be. But that's ok, God had other plans for me .
