I had a very pleasant surprise in the greenhouse this week. one of my favourite things is to buy the plants off the discount rack at Home Depot, Lowes, and the local grocery. Mostly orchids at the first two and Gloxinias and Gerbia daisies at the grocery. Well, this one joined the hospital ward in the Greenhouse this past spring and rewarded a summer's patience this Fall:

It is nice to live in a climate where plants grow easily and it's possible to have flowers in the garden most of the year. I love, love, love flowers.

I won a $50 gift cert to Select Comfort and $20 to McCormick and Schmick's (McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant - Fresh Seafood, Aged Steaks, Salads, Pastas reaaaalllly good seafood) doing a ScanDayton scancode competition today (first one to scan the barcode and get the correct answer gets the prize). I cashed in with a down alternative comforter and a pillow for my hubby (hopefully he will sleep better with a new pillow).

Oh come now Porter! There's nothing more famous than the inimitable English Country Garden. I'd have one if there was water enough here. Surely, there's a little plot that the association will let you grow some flowers? Maybe a sunny windowsill where a few Oncidiums could brighten winter days with colourful sprays of flowers. Besides, without the greenhouse, I wouldn't be able to grow as much as I do here. Along with the snow in the winter, there's very little humidity in the summer and no rain. Another advantage of the Greenhouse is that it's largely goat-proof. All they can do is stand outside and drool! Wah-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaa! Ahem, sorry... the goats and I have issues.
Gee, if I had a hoop house I could garden in the winter when there is lots of water here. Cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, carrots... But I need another place to live before that. Aw gosh, details, details...

I think you misunderstood, Stude. We're in the country on a fair bit of land and have more than enough garden space. We took over care of as much space as we could around our house because the grounds gardeners just aren't up to scratch and they have plenty of other plants to tend to besides what grows around us and I think there's ample green on this island, so color is must.

We only just had our patio extended and a new path so our neighbors can move around without walking under our windows. I've planted most of what's available that should bloom throughout winter, but must get busy on the bulbs. Hopefully, next spring we'll have a variety of blooming color to enjoy that'll be photo worthy and I can hardly wait to get my favorite begonias planted en mass.

I'm pretty certain I wouldn't be happy having goats to contend with. The blasted slugs and snails give me enough grief, but the bunnies thankfully stay down around the vegetable plots.

Your living situation is worrisome and I will continue to keep you in my prayers. The stress of that must be tough and you handle it better than I would. God does provide. We must not forget that.

We all thought you moved away from George's influence. Or whatever his name is. If so, then it is your choice on how you want to live. There has been many alternatives offered in advice and positions. You missed out on a great caretaker job BTW. The person that got the position thanked me profusely. BTW there might be another position open like that. I've had my log cabin and 20 acres up for sale for a year now and had 4 contracts fall through. I'll be offering the same proposal to a trusted individual.

As I told you before, Rad, I have no way to get to Missouri. Several thousand miles is not a free trip. Yes, it is my choice to stay here for now. However, I'm not going to bolt in panic. Rash decisions are oft regretted.

Yeah, I guess my understanding was off, sorry Porter. It sounds like a lovely place to live. It's kinda too bad more of the Aristos don't let go of their rockpiles and do the same thing with them.

Love the new look Sis!

Yeah, the leaves on the native Dogwoods are already vermillion, red and yellow around here. It's really beautiful looking into the woods from the road and seeing the colours showing in the understory. My Auroras however, are still green. Oddly, though the nights are getting slowly colder, the days are still warm. Go figure.

Some people around here wonder why I drive so slowly. The way I rubberneck, any faster would clearly be unsafe, LOL!

Yes, here, too, Ang. we turned the heat on last night and are forecast to experience our first frost this weekend. I believe it because I was getting darn right chilled by the time I finished planting my pansies. It's a wee bit early, but that's life in Britain and now that my autumn flower beds are colorful, I'm not bothered.

That's what our summers are like, Filo.

I could live without snow this year. We had more than enough last year to fill our quota for a few Christmases and we don't want anything to delay our flight back to Texas. I can already taste the tamales. Yum!

That would be my ideal winter Unfortunately, I don't live in an area with that kind of winter. I keep hearing that the Almanac says this winter is suppose to be worse than last winter. Better not be the case.

gosh Porter, had you planted brussels sprouts in July or august, they'd be perfect in October!

As for the guests in the veggie garden... Rabbit stew is one of my favourites! And all ya need is a pellet gun. A gilly suit wouldn't hurt either.

I like a bit of snow. In fact, I like a lot of snow for that matter. Well... several feet of it anyway. Ten feet, like they get in New England and upstate NY would be a bit much. Still, snow makes everything look nice. I don't even mind driving in it, as long as there isn't much traffic.

My raingutter cleaners are hard at work, LOL! The Jays and the Cardnals (they're blue here) are hard at work getting, I don't know what, out of the gutters. Nice thing about it is that makes it easier to clean them out, LOL. Not to mention the fun of watching the birds go at it.

Ugh, I petted two of the Billys and now my hands stink! Gotta go wash them, change my shirt, etc...

I didn't know goats are so stinky. We only had cows, calves, pigs, chickens, dogs and cats on our farm. The pigs were stinky - but nothing is worse than chickens - ick!
