I know were not susposed to dwell on the past but what are things that you miss from the past...I remember when I was younger the main road by my parents house. Once the coal miners changed shifts in the winter you would never see another car on the road usally until early morning and when it snowed it made for great sled riding..now you cant go a minute with a car coming down the road even at 3am in the morning.I also thought it was cool that we had a little cooler on the porch that the milkman would leave milk and eggs in..And one of the biggest things is that everything was closed on Sundays and you visited family.

I miss playing hide 'n seek. I loved that game.

A side note about the milkman's delivery...I grew up on a farm and we had a cow for milk, butter and cream. We moved in town when I was 8 and then had to buy those things. The first thing I can remember from that was that the butter we bought was yellow, I asked my Mom why since ours on the farm was white...she said they added coloring to it. I miss homemade butter too....that was so good.

Great question btw!

I miss going to my grandparent's farm...playing hide & seek in the barn, feeding the new calfs (calves? ), driving out into the field in the old pickup truck to pick blackberries & coming back & making a pie with grandma, delivering lunch to my grandfather while he was out in the field baling hay....

I miss running to the corner grocer and getting penny candy that was 3 pieces for a penny.

Me too Lilli:clap: I tell my kids that I use to get $.25 for allowance and I would go to the store and get a bottle of pop, a Pep Chew candy bar, a bag of chips, and a bag of penny candy - all for $.25!!!!!!!! (remember those little mojo candies?)

Yes, that was the good ol days! Remember Chocolate Soldiers?:yum:

I think what I miss the most is going into the woods and playing for hours in the creek and not being worried that someone would harm us! It's a shame our kids cant do that!

* I do miss Sundays being family time!!!

I miss the freedom an eleven year old, 30-some years ago, was able to feel on a bike. It could take you anywhere, as fast or as slow as you wanted to go. I rode my bike everywhere, and like a previous poster said -- you didn't have to worry about being snatched if you and your friends rode your bikes through the woods to explore that old abandoned farmhouse every woods seems to have. The world was ours, and our bikes took us there, and those memories remind me of warm summer days when the night didn't come until 9:30 p.m. We'd be exploring the world on our bikes for 12 hours some days. :)

I really miss that too Tammy! I remember playing with my friends for hours in the woods across the street and riding my bike EVERYWHERE too snoochface. It is sad that our children won't experience the innocence and safety of those days :(

I couldn't agree more. I remember getting up during the summer, getting on my bike, meeting friends, and being gone all day long.

While moving was primarily answering a call to ministry, my family and I just left the suburbs of Chicago and moved to a small town. It's a little safer but not much. I feel bad my kids don't have the chance to experience the freedom you talk about although they do have more here than near the big city.

We didn't have woods...but we had miles and miles of undeveloped pastures and hills and creeks where you could catch tad polls, blow the fuzz off of cattails, and make forts. Dairy farms would break up the nothingness that we would ride our bikes far into, and hike into. And for fun, bunches of us kids would go to Cardboard Hill and slide down the hillside on giant peices of cardboard. I miss the days when kids considered it a punishment to be cooped up inside. Now they like their video games and their anime...and in my opinion, miss so much more than we ever did.

I also miss telephones attached to the wall by a long curly cord. Antenas instead of cable, so TV was basically free. Water from the tap...bottled water, filtered water? Who would pay for water? That was just silly back then. Turntables. Soda pop in a tall bottle. No such thing as aluminum cans. And 5¢ candy. (My Mom told me to buy penny candy once...and she didn't believe me that I couldn't find any for that price. They just didn't have penny candy when I was growing up. ) Walking barefoot everywhere.

Oh...and TG&Y 5 and dime store...were I would longingly look at Barbie Dolls...but, happily settle for pop beeds or colored lined notebook paper and pencils. :D

Remember those wax lips and coke bottles that had juice in them? And the candy cigarettes that if you blew on them would blow a puff of powder in the air like you were really smoking? (what a stupid message to send children! :D ) And the ice cream man, who's ice cream wasn't overpriced or stale...like the shisters that sell it today?

I miss psychodelic colored cloths, paisley and granny gowns and my Mom's white lipstick and black eyeliner too. :D

I don't think it's dwelling in the past...it's good to have fond memories and wax nostalgic once in awhile. It does the soul good to remember how far we've come and the good memories along the way. Put a smile on my face anyway.

The slower pace, and absolutely the safety and innocence. I never heard some words until I was in Jr. High and even then they were not common. So many people have filthy mouths these days, women cussing out little children in stores, sickening! Little children with filthy mouths.

TV now has over 100 channels but only about 5 are fit to watch! Children are liable to be exposed to filthy words sexual situations, including homosexuals ones anytime after 8pm. Even the news breaks are risky. The total moral breakdown that has happened in our country is heartbreaking. I wish my children could have experienced the 50's.

Actually going "downtown" to shop and seeing all your friends on main street, the Christmas decorations in the windows seemed so awesome back then. Going to shop and eat in Woolworth's.
Remember the little jukebox that was in every booth so we could pick our music right from our booth,in cafes? Man I loved those!

No one mowed grass on a Sunday and you never went anywhere unless it was visiting, because nothing was open. My Dad had a tradition that he played his record collection all day Sunday until it was time for Disney, because there wasn't a thing on TV anyone wanted to watch, luckily he NEVER watched sports,LOL!

And how many of us had chicken on Sunday,LOL? Seems like we always had chicken or roast beef.

As you can tell I LOVE THE 50's!

I do miss the Summers of my childhood, when we stayed in our cabin by the sea for 2 months ... which was as long as our Summer holidays lasted. Life was simple and easy back then ... what is still as it was back then, is that the stores are still closed on Sundays in Norway. That is very good. I grew up without a TV in our home, but life was never boring.

Those are 2 biggies Tammy. :amen:

We used to play outside until all hours - mom didn't worry about where we were or who we were with - she knew that our friends' moms would keep us in line, all the moms scolded us when we needed it.

And Sundays - every Sunday after church we'd drive to my grandparents' house in Upper Sandusky and spend the afternoon visiting. Sitting on the front porch swing with my grandpa was the best.

The other thing I miss - the lack of responsibility. I get too bogged down in all the stuff I have to do and don't take enough time to simply enjoy life.

Oh...and I miss making snow cream after the second big snow (Mom said the first snow got all the gunk out of the air).

And...laying outside on the grass in the summer and looking at the stars...making mud pies...

this brings back so many good memories.

Making snow angels, rolling down hills and finding animals in the clouds.

Grandma's house....where I grew up.
We played "ditch-em" in the streets until the streetlights came on and after......
Grandma's front porch and the swing....used to sit and swing and talk with friends for hours....
Grandma's garden (after the harvest it was a great place to have dirtball fights) and the grape arbor where all the great jam and pies came from.
That gosh-awful wallpaper in the room I sometimes shared with her.....used to lay in bed and count those huge peonies until I went to sleep....and she would snore and I would have to make a noise or clear my throat to get her to stop.
My friends who lived next door to Grandma...Kam, Missy and Vanessa
Wow...I could go on and on....but you know....however good those days were and however much I may miss them I'm sure lovin' life now and thanking God for the wonderful man He gave me and the three terrific boys I have and the home full of memories we have all built together. It's so sweet!

All these posts make me so nostalgic, but your first sentence, and the poster who wrote about playing in the woods and no one had to worry about their safety is what really breaks my heart, and makes me long for the past. we WERE safer then.

We could even go trick-or-treating on Halloween night IN THE DARK,and never, ever heard of a single incident in my childhood and we lived all over the west and southwest and northwest moved about every 18 months with my Dad in the AF,but we only lived on base twice, cause only Cheyenne,WY,and Minot,No.Dak. had nice base housing. When I was about 11-12 in Tucson, AZ. My sister and I went rolling skating almost every single summer night and we WALKED there and back and cut through a large park in the dark in safety. The difference for my children made me so sad and I have missed the 50's ever since I had kids of my own, and now grandchildren, because it is such a rotten world and you can't trust a soul around children! Sorry, got on my soapbox here.
