I think what I miss the most is going into the woods and playing for hours in the creek and not being worried that someone would harm us! It's a shame our kids cant do that!
We didn't have woods...but we had miles and miles of undeveloped pastures and hills and creeks where you could catch tad polls, blow the fuzz off of cattails, and make forts. Dairy farms would break up the nothingness that we would ride our bikes far into, and hike into. And for fun, bunches of us kids would go to Cardboard Hill and slide down the hillside on giant peices of cardboard. I miss the days when kids considered it a punishment to be cooped up inside. Now they like their video games and their anime...and in my opinion, miss so much more than we ever did.
I also miss telephones attached to the wall by a long curly cord. Antenas instead of cable, so TV was basically free. Water from the tap...bottled water, filtered water? Who would pay for water? That was just silly back then. Turntables. Soda pop in a tall bottle. No such thing as aluminum cans. And 5¢ candy. (My Mom told me to buy penny candy once...and she didn't believe me that I couldn't find any for that price. They just didn't have penny candy when I was growing up. ) Walking barefoot everywhere.
Oh...and TG&Y 5 and dime store...were I would longingly look at Barbie Dolls...but, happily settle for pop beeds or colored lined notebook paper and pencils.
Remember those wax lips and coke bottles that had juice in them? And the candy cigarettes that if you blew on them would blow a puff of powder in the air like you were really smoking? (what a stupid message to send children!

) And the ice cream man, who's ice cream
wasn't overpriced or stale...like the shisters that sell it today?
I miss psychodelic colored cloths, paisley and granny gowns and my Mom's white lipstick and black eyeliner too.
I don't think it's dwelling in the past...it's good to have fond memories and wax nostalgic once in awhile. It does the soul good to remember how far we've come and the good memories along the way. Put a smile on my face anyway.
