  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

[1] On the third day there was a marriage at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there;
[2] Jesus also was invited to the marriage, with his disciples.
[3] When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."
[4] And Jesus said to her, "O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come."
[5] His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."
[6] Now six stone jars were standing there, for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.
[7] Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim.
[8] He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast." So they took it.
[9] When the steward of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward of the feast called the bridegroom
[10] and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first; and when men have drunk freely, then the poor wine; but you have kept the good wine until now."
[11] This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

I have been reflecting and studying on the wedding at Cana lately, and have learned that many theologians, both Catholic and Protestant, believe that the wine in Jesus' first miracle can be seen as symbolic for the blood of salvation that Jesus was to shed for us on Cavalry. That is interesting. If the wine is symbolic for salvation, that means that our Blessed Mother can be seen as saying to Jesus:
"They have no [salvation]".

Jesus then says:
"What is that to me and to thee?"

In my studies, I've also read arguments from some Greek scholars that Jesus then phrases another question:
"Has my hour not yet come?"

Mary then says to the servants
"Do whatever He tells you".

In this reflection of the scriptures it shows us the concern of our Blessed Mother in our salvation. Once again Mary shows us that she knows the mission of Her son. I'm sure throughout the 30 or so years since the angel Gabriel spoke heavenly words to her, she reflected on those words time and time again.

And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end."

As Jesus grows, His mother is witness to many things. She sees firsthand the development of her Son. Jesus desire to be with His heavenly Father is obvious.

and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously." And he said to them, "How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man.

Now it is time for her to tell her Son that his hour has come:
"They have no [salvation]"

The vessels that the Jews used for their rites of purification are now used to hold newly transformed wine. The wine is then poured out for the wedding feast. Jesus blood is poured out for all.

This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Ahhhh, a mother's wisdom. Through the petiton of our Blessed Mother, the blood of salvation is poured out for us at the weddding feast. Through the petition of Mary, we come to believe in her Son.

The wedding feast at Cana is also a forshadowing of the Mass. At Cana, water is turned into wine. In the Mass, wine is turned into Jesus' blood.

During the consecration the priest says, "Through the mingling of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled Himself to share in our humanity."

Water represents humanity, wine represents divinity. The two mingle together in the chalace and become the blood of Christ.

Indeed!!!
"They have no wine" can also be interpreted as they are in need of divine grace...as wine was for the Jews a symbol of divine graces and blessings...

So when "Mary says Do as he tell you"..she is pointing the way for obtaining divine graces the ultimate being salvation: Obedience to the Word of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus.

Those who proclaim Mary as Co-redemptorix and Intercessor of graces point to this account as one of the strongest of the biblical evidence for their beliefs.

I posted this same topic at http://forums.catholic-convert.com/ Della, one of the administrators, posted this beautiful poem that she wrote in response. I thought I'd share it with you.

They Have No Wine

Mother of fair love,
Thy heart is full of
Tender care
For us who have no wine.

Wayward are we
To cast aside
That which we
Do not understand:

“Let me celebrate
With my own
Poor drink,”
Say many.

“It is too great
A thing for me
To understand,”
Say others.

“Come, let us
Not desire
Such passé‚ things,”
Declare the wise.

But in thy love
Thou didst murmur
To thy Son,
“They have no wine.”

O Mother,
Please
End not thy plea
For us in need.

For we celebrate,
Alas!
Not the wedding, but
Our own folly.

We are too
Indifferent,
Worse—flaccid,
To rejoice.

Our eyes are blind,
In our own wisdom,
To the radiance
Of the Glory.

In the midst of revelry
We thirst unknowing
For the Joy of
Heaven’s ken.

Enrich us, dear Lady,
With thy prayer
And whisper once again,
“They have no wine.”

(John 2:1-12)
