• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. i can think of different ways to make your box beautiful.
paint it a solid color; then decorate it.
use assorted old cut up magazine pieces.
wrap it with sticky paper, or glue with pretty wrapping paper.
you can use cloth too... i made some with glued on material.

A few that i have met have been cutters. All with DID. They tell me of cutting items that are inside in the inner world within them. These cutting tools must be given to Jesus. Each and every one of them. Unless you get rid of these as well as the ones on the outside then the temptation will always be there.

I know I have problems on the inside that need to be resolved and until I do cutting is still going to be a temptation, but I'm working on it. It takes time to heal on the inside though. I'm just trying to think of things as distractions something to help me cope right now in the mean time.

don't listen to people who tell you that you have other opsticals to fight first. you starting anywhere on working through these days is a very big step. we are told to practice and retrain our thinking. you have to start somewhere. we all do... the Holy Spirit will bless every step forward. :hug:
distracting is a tool used in many therapy practices. it's also very biblical. :bow: xo dee

If I were making up a distraction box, I know what I would put in it!! You just have to put things in it that make you happy or even just express how you are feeling, as cutting comes from those feelings of numbness. I would maybe put in a pad of paper and utensils (for drawing), or even just a coloring book- Which sounds really lame... But there is something therapeutic about choosing the colors and placing them. I might also put in my favorite cd that is relaxing. Also a journal or even just paper to write to God, or a really good friend to tell them how I feel. I always write to my friend and it is really good to express how you feel and have someone there for you! In the box I might also put in something that reminds me of a good memory, or something a friend gave me out of love (Christmas gift, birthday card, etc.). I know I might put in some photos or a note someone has written me!

It all depends on the reasons behind you're cutting as well. Some things that wor for me might not work for you...
OH and another good item is a bible. One that is cheap or old and that you can just mark it up :) So then you can listen to God's word instead of the voices in your head- although that is always really hard to do.

I am so proud of you for taking steps in the healing process and giving a lot of effort to get better. That is so inspiring!
