• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

anyone got any input as to the theology of bi-polar and differentiating between battles of the spirit and the flesh vs. battles with bipolar disorder? Like when do we know it's just the old spirit and the flesh and when do we know we're cracking up? and is there really any line of demarcation? Does this cross into personality disorders?

i'd change the words "cracking up", there's no sense degrading us anymore than we already are in society... and it's not just this phrase, there are others.

anyway, sometimes our struggle with bp and spirit/flesh is interwined. like your symptoms make you struggle with fleshly desires, for example, one of the symptoms of bipolar is excessive drive toward normally pleasurable activities, like sex, alcohol, shopping.

The way I experience it is intertwined for sure. Both good and bad as we know and understand it is intertwined - for our sickness shapes our lives. Our need for the more physical comforts of life tells us something fundamental about our illness. Our moods are out of wack and emotional people often do things driven by their moods.
Like I really feel like - am in the mood - to go shopping, having a drink, smoke, sex or whatever may bring us 'comfort' or 'pleasure'. None of these things is usually wrong if we keep it within the proper bounderies but that is where we so often go wrong. Our psychotic minds obscure, twist or can even totally disregard the proper bounderies during our manic phases and that is where the real problem lays I think.

I was diagnosed bipolar 12 years ago and believe the problem is physical at its core--mainly because I've found drugs that work to stabilize me. Many pastors try to treat depression with Bible verses but that didn't work for me. I needed medical attention that only a professional doctor could provide.

Bipolar disorder can lead to spiritual problems, and it's fine to try to treat those spiritual problems with theology, but it sure helps a lot more to treat the underlying physical problem first, with stabilizing drugs, etc.

Hope this makes sense,

--Jon
