Does it Matter? I'm a Computer System's analyst anticipating going back to school to study theology. My ultimate intention is to teach theology. Money doesn't matter. I am totally enamored with the idea of being able to earn a living by teaching people about God all day. I do it now for free...
Teaching theology is a very dangerous occupation. The theology schools are full of people who aren't Christians. A theology teacher who does not understand his subject can bring damnation upon himself amazingly quickly.
Of course, there are biblical scholars who have something useful to contribute in the way of linguistic, archaeological, or other talents. I respect them, but only if they are sincere. But being a mere theologian really does not warrant a salary (IMO). Anyone can read the bible and anyone can teach it - but only if you are a true Christian.
And all true Christians are theologians. Its just that professional theologians have hijacked the word.
And what you often find is that professional theologians try to justify their existence by writing pointless books, and teaching things, which are full of ungodly nuances and interpretations. I've know people go to theology school and be indoctrinated with such huge amounts of tripe, that it takes them the rest of their lives to "unlearn" it (if they ever do).
If you want propaganda, going to theology school is one way to get it. An interesting propaganda that modern theolgicans are currently engaged in putting forward is how many ways can one invent to get round Paul's injunction in 1 Cor 14;34 for women to remain silent in church. I think there are at least 4 ot 5 established ways of getting round 1 Cor 14;34 now, all of them cited in the modern commentaries, all of them see-through, hollow, arguments, all of them the work of theolgicans trying to justify their existence. I can only strongly recommend against anyone from pursuing a "career" in theology - at least not until you have been a Christian for at least 10 years.
I am convinced there will be many professional theologians in hell, for I am convinced that nearly all heresies derive from the pens of the professional theologians.
