I just had a professor denounce and make fun of the ordinance of headcoverings and short hair for men/long hair for women. In my first day of class. This is a Theology course!!!! I sat there for the rest of the class with my jaw dropped. I go to a church of God school, but seriously, they still read the same Bible I do!

Obviously your theology prof doesn't know much about the history of the church. It sounds like it will be an interesting class. The headcovering part does not surprise me, but the idea that someone from the Church of God would knock the idea of short hair on men and long hair on women does. The Church of God tends to be one of the more conservative Pentecostal groups left as far as I know.

I don't know if you have read this before Amishgirl, but I thought it might be interesting to you if you had not. This is one of the writings of Tertullian title "On the Veiling of Virgins". In it he is arguing that virgins as well as married women veil. It is interesting because he discusses the various places that Christian women veil. Also, he admonishes those who are getting lax in the practice as far as thinking a small piece of cloth (aka doily) was sufficient.

Most know that I don't like to define style when it comes to the veil, but it is interesting reading. One of the most interesting facts is that he doesn't have to argue for the use of a veil in general because it was the excepted practice by married women and many virgins.

The idea that people try to deny the history of this practice amazes me.

Heard of it, never read it... I'll check it out.

One of my friends said that this particular professor likes to present opposite points of view in order to engage his students in conversation and argument so that they can truly know what they believe and how to present it in such a way as to convince others. So maybe it won't be that bad. I'm hoping he was just trying to insite some thought among his students, because I really liked him until he made that comment.

This is common practice among many professors & those classes in which this happened tended to be the more interesting & lively ones - but be prepared to defend any position you take! I think you will really enjoy it once you get used to this style of teaching.:)
