the work of God

i have been thinking about the scripture where some people asked Jesus what they had to do, to do the works of God (am i correct in that they were wanting to perform miracles like Christ had done?). And Jesus said, "this is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent".
My question is this. Is this text another example showing that God works in man to cause him to believe in Christ? i.e. Christ is 'turning around' their question, and saying that God works in people to bring them to belief?
I bring this up, because lately as i read the N.T. i am keeping my eyes open to the many places where the doctrine of calling/choosing/etc. is mentioned/alluded to.
Do you think i am forcing this text to appear as such a mention? or am i wrong in this case?

Here are some relevant Scriptures to consider:

(1 Cor. 2:14 KJV) But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

(Phil. 2:13 KJV) For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

(Rom. 11:29 NASB) For the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.

The censored book is Titus. Apparently the CF language filter doesn't like the three letter abbreviation of it.

Anyway, Jon, thanks for those references. I'd like to pin you down, as to the passage i was asking about though. I am not questioning the validity of calling/choosing etc., i just wish to know if you think this passage is such an example? that's all.

Hi Manny. Absolutely. In light of the passages that we have seen, it becomes very apparent that what Jesus is saying at least applies to election. The interpretation of the verse might be a little bit different (remember, one interpretation, many applications), which would not make it a strong proof text unto itself, but when taken with the others, it does help to clarify and solidify the truth that God chooses whom he will choose.

You are on the right track. It's God's work that people believe, because if it wasn't for God's work these indiviuals will still be eternally condemn and will still be held accountable.
