In an age where rulers tend to model foolishness rather than wisdom what was it about Solomon that made him a wise ruler?

Theresa May PM of the GB calls an election which squanders a decent majority on the eve of major negotiations with Europe over BREXIT, under Merkel defence spending in Germany is now barely over 1% of GNP despite a growing list of threats to the country and even the possibility of American abandonment. Macron an atheist says he can save France and even Europe. We have all too many examples of foolishness by leaders in the modern world. Trump also has modelled his examples of foolishness.

In an age where wisdom is in short supply it seems a biblical example of a wise ruler is essential reading. Solomon is reputed to have been one of the wisest rulers ever and also one of the richest. He is accredited with writing much of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs. Roman Catholics also acknowledge the Wisdom of Solomon as one of his works.

Solomon was the son of David but also of a Hittite woman Bathsheba. Indeed by the modern definition of being Jewish he was not a Jew cause his mother was a foreigner. Her original husband Uriah was killed by David to make way for David to make a claim on her. He would later marry Hittites , Egyptians and other foreigners who are widely claimed to have led him astray. Indeed he was a man who had more than 700 wives and 300 concubines.

1) Why did God make Solomon wise – (as a favour to his father, his answer to his prayer, because he built the temple, to establish a messianic model??).

2) How do we know Solomon was wise - what examples do we have?

3) What are the Characteristics of wise rule that Solomon demonstrated?

4) What did Solomon do wrong?

5) What lessons can we learn from Solomon for today?
