My 4 year old little boy has recently discovered the word why.
Me:" no honey we cannot go outside to play right now you just had a bath."
My son:"why not?"
Me:"you would get dirty."
Son:"why?"
Me:"that's what happens when you play outside."
Son:"why?"
Its an endless circle.

Yep. While it can be exasperating now, you will look back at it a few years from now with big smiles. It is a common phase that most kids go thru.

I'd say the why is a beautiful word. Cherish every time your son says it, and don't worry if you ever have to say, "I don't know, but that's a great question! Let's google it and find out."

My children are 13 and 18, and they still ask why quite a bit. It's often in a different form, more sophisticated, and it is also often more difficult topics. I also work in a preschool with three and four year olds and get asked this a million times a day.

Sometimes I respond. Sometimes I ignore it. It all depends on circumstances like why they are asking, their attitude, and what is going on at the moment.

Yep, he's at the age where he's testing you. I remember being a child and asking all the "whys" and being told "because I said so!" I guess it got monotonous and that was the END of all whys for a while! ^_^

I asked a lot of whys when I was a child.
Why am I me and not someone else.
Why are there trees?
Why is the sky blue and how far does it go does it ever stop?
I asked these three questions back to back one day when I was little

When your toddler asks "why", it is a good idea to let them know that they need to turn their "why" into a full sentence. You can use this as a learning curve for them. They are encouraged to think about their words in order to form a full sentence (which is hard for most toddlers to do). This tends to alleviate many of the "why"s as said toddler must think if it is really worth them questioning when they are asked to formulate an entire sentence to do so. This method will be sure to eliminate many of the unnecessary "why"s. Then make sure you use the normal ones as a teaching tool and answer them if you can. I don't think it is a good idea to actively discourage them from saying "why", rather train them into using it at the appropriate time, which is not every ten seconds :)

Isn't it great? My kids are 8 and 6 and are starting to outgrow this phase, but I love it. I guess I can talk them to death. :nomouth:

What is your usual answer to "Why do we have to go to church?" This seems like a really profound question.

He only asked why we had to go to church one time. But I've been trying to talk to him more about God. He didn't want to go to daycare the other day when we forgot his blanket at home. I said, "remember you can do all things through Christ who gives you strength." he was saying "I can't go". So I reminded him of that verse ( we had just discussed it the night before) and made a muscle. I said "show me your muscle! Christ gives you strength, show me your muscle" he smiled a bit and made a muscle.

I Tried reading from the actual Bible to my kids at night. But my son, that's the four year old, said that's not a bedtime story mommy. Gods book isnt a bedtime story.
So I bought a children's Bible.
Tada! It's a bedtime story now!
