  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Im just wondering if anyone else here has read these series. I am sort of addictated to both, which is a problem because it takes the Jordan and Martin so long to write each installment in their respective series(Jordan=WOT, Martin=ASOIAF for those of you who arnt familiar)

I was introduced to the Wheel of Time by my father ,who has recently given up on the series, about 8 years ago. I stumbled apon the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series while getting ready to go on a road trip to Vancouver with my family two summers ago.

So, for those of you who have read these series, what are you favorite books, characters and plot lines in them?

WoT started to...drag for me, though the books were pretty good at the beginning. I love love love ASoIaF, one of the best series ever written.

In ASoIaF, lets see. I like Arya, Jon, and Dany the best. Though Tyrion and Jaime are on the list. I love all the books, i don't know which one is the best. Plat lines would definately be Dany's. Though learning who Jon's parents are is going to be great :) whenever that happens...

Haven't read ASolaF, but I'm a big fan of WOT. I agree, the last several books dragged, but I heard that's because he didn't use an editor, but that the newest book does, so it should revert back to the more exciting earlier part of the series.

I'm interested in seeing when Moraine pops back up.

Let's see,

WoT: Lews Therin. Not sure about plot lines.

SIF: The guy that has the island castle. Once again not sure on the plot.

WoT dragged a little, but I will still finish them in the hopes the pace picks up a bit. I very much enjoy the SIF series, and believe that Martin can easily be mentioned with Terry Brooks, and Tolkein.

I have read WOT up into the beginning of Winter's Heart. Since I read the books too far apart, I'm re-reading the series now. Thus far, I think Mat Cauthon and Thom Merrilin are my favorite characters. As for my favorite plotline... I'm not sure at the moment. I'll let you know after I'm all caught up again.

I haven't read ASOIAF. Is it recommended?

I haven't bothered to read the WoT series yet, but I think ASOFAI is totally rad. My favorite character is definitely Jon. I remember looking on amazon last year and it said the 4th book was going to be coming out that august, now here it is almost this august, and amazon now says it's not coming out until november. Supposedly George Martin was really upset by the elections, but I think this is a little much. I wish he'd just release his book already! There's also a board game and a customizable card game out that's based on the books - they're both real fun.

I like WOT, I am on the second book. I haven't read that other series, but I heard it was pretty good.

First couple of books are pretty awesome. It gets really weird later on in the series, and takes turns unimaginable from Eye of the World, but I was quick to accomodate. It's a fun series.

I gave up on WoT after 20 pages, but ASoIaF sucked me in from the start. Though Martin breaks my heart with some of the characters he kills off.

I think Jon has the noblest heart, but I think I'd like to have a beer with Tyrion. :D
But that what makes his books so good, you can't guarentee a character is going to survive like you can in most books. You know that HP is going to live 'til book 7 (or however long the series will be) But there's no guarentee Arya will be alive in the next chapter. I Love it :):):)

I'd read a fair chunk of the Wheel of Time series...even got the PC game at one point. But around book 6, I think, It just lost its lustre...it really dragged on....

But I absolutely LOVED the books so far in ASOIAF, and can't wait to get my hands on the latest one, whenever that happens

Terry Brooks and Tolkien should never be mentioned in the same sentence, unless that sentence goes something like "Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara series is quite possibly the most blatant Lord of the Rings ripoff I've ever read." To each their own though... :)

WoT = :sick:

Martin's Song of Ice and Fire is pretty entertaining so far, but hopefully he'll end the series before it gets too drawn out and burdened with subplots...

I can imagine. Now I know a lot of people who complain because the series drags on. It kind of follows the theme of the American life, that is wanting everything fast. They want a series fast and short just like their McDonalds drive thru. I think that if you really get hooked on the idea and the characters then you will read the books, no matter how many there are.

:) i agree...I read SoS and made a list of the similarities, I don't know where the list is now. And I can't get over the fact he named an elf Durin...that's the name of the dwarves ancestors, you can't name an elf that...

I picked up the first three books of WOT when I was going to Saudi Arabia in '91. I loved them. I even read them again before finding the next book. Now, I've read all of them exept the tenth book, "Crossroads of Twilight". Can anyone tell me if the action picks up in that book? I ask because I really don't want to read another book where the only action is in the last chapter. With books with pages in the high 600's (I have the hard covers) and 30+ chapters (some of the books have over 50 chapters), that's saying alot.

Don't get me wrong. I really like the books. The intrigue, the suspense, the scheming, and conniving. The way everyone was scheming to manipulate Rand and then he turns the table on them.

Finally, I'm with Visum Cuspis, when's Moraine coming back?
