Ben Shapiro mentions this in his book primetime propaganda. How powerful Hollywood producers are engineering what society thinks through the media usually to the left of politics. They create a character that everyone comes to love and then create a storyline where they do something controversial. This way they get people to accept controversial issues they would usually be against (make something that is usually seen as wrong/immoral seem OK and acceptable).

One example given is from the 70's sitcom Maude. During the '70s abortion was a hotly debated topic and many were against it. A year before the Roe v Wade court case the main character Maude has an abortion in one of the episodes. As Maude was a character that everyone loved this helped changed attitudes towards abortion at the time and paved the way for legalizing abortion.

Hollywood takes lovable characters and gets them to do controversial things and this makes it acceptable for people who love the shows and the characters to accept things they would not usually accept because they think if it is OK for the character they like then it mustn't be too bad. This has been going on for years but many people don't realize it. It has shaped the way society thinks.

Not only is Hollywood influencing the way we think but they give themselves awards for doing it. We see this in the way actors get on their soapboxes virtue signaling about how we should be saving the planet and how bad it is that certain minorities have not received more awards. Except the public has caught onto to their hypocrisy and is rejecting the awards in droves.

Ben Shapiro? Haha, no.

And you have it backwards. First society, then popular culture.

How do you mean first society then popular culture? If I understand you I think that is what I more or less said. Society creates the culture and in this case, uses the media to promote it. Well, when I say society, in this case, certain factions of society being the left.

Yes, popular culture will because it is popular but that does not mean it is good. But sometimes minorities dictate what happens. Sometimes unpopular people win, especially in politics. Sometimes unpopular ideas become popular. New ideas that are yet to become popular and accepted or even implemented despite most people not liking the idea are first spread and imbedded into society by the media. The media plays a role in influencing people.

Sometimes popular ideas have side effects that are unpopular. Society's values are not always reflected directly by what was intended. People can perceive things differently. There are many unpopular ideas that dominate society which was implemented because of the pressure from minorities. Look at PC culture. Look at how a new fad for example that is unpopular gets media attention and then suddenly everyone is doing it. That is how new fads become popular.
