I agree with you on making more of our own things and relying on foreign goods less...

But as for why are we still having shortages right now I do know China is closing down a lot of it's manufacturing atm ... The reason given is COVID outbreak (I'm not sure how much I believe that since they didn't shut down like this when COVID first hit). Granted that wouldn't necessarily affect what's on lots now but between COVID lockdowns, shipping issues and problems getting ships into ports due to various issues.. it's little wonder supply isn't keeping up with demand... And now, fun fun, China is shutting down a lot of manufacturing.

So yeah, I'm with you on trying to make our own goods..

I guess we do have semiconductor manufacturers in the US but they don't create the chips for cars. I think you are right with all the setbacks we've gone through over the past 2 1/2 years, its understandable as to why we have a shortage now. Looks like I'll try next year for the car when the dealerships are starving for customers again (hopefully).

Some of the chip manufacturers designed chips, but had them made outside of their home countries. Samsung is the world’s largest chip manufacturer.

If it's a matter of cheap labor, why can't the US build some plants in some of the "root cause of immigration" countries? That would improve their lot, and ours.

The other thing I'm thinking is that the current administration is heavily pushing for electric cars, and seem content to leave gas prices at unprecedented levels. I'm wondering how motivated car manufacturers are to build new gasoline powered cars, when there is political movement afoot to discourage the sale and use of them?
