I assume that everyone here is familiar with the unpardonable sin, mentioned in the following verses:

Matthew 12:32 – Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Mark 3:29 – But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.

Luke 12:10 – And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

A wary Christian might avoid committing the unpardonable sin, but depending on how easy it is to actually utter the necessary words, a would-be Christian might accidentally say something (or be tricked into saying something!) that would condemn them past the point of redemption.

In fact, we often say silent prayers in the knowledge that God can and will listen to what we say in our hearts. Might we, in an absent-minded moment, think something that makes our salvation null and void? If it is that easy for Christians, then how much easier must it be for people who have not yet been saved?

We need to be mindful of this hazard, and also of the fact that truly unscrupulous people might use this fact to trick a Christian out of his or her Heavenly reward. Unscrupulous people like our opponents in the culture war, for instance. What can we do about this issue?

It is blaspheming the Holy Spirit. I don't know whether this means insulting It out loud, or thinking bad thoughts about It, or even failing to capitalize Its name. That's what I'm saying. It's a wide open chink in the armor of our salvation that we should be prepared to deal with.

Hello fellas...

Im not convinced that a person in this day in age could actually commit the unpardonable sin. I think that the phrase 'unpardonable sin' is used way too flippantly by believers. I am actually convinced that the unpardonable sin was something unique to Jesus' day.

To build upon that and state my position on the matter at hand... the unpardonable sin, i.e. to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, is commited when a person abides and remains in total rejection of every level of revelation which could save a person.

It is possible to see this principle in Matt 12, Mark 3, and Luke 12... the Pharisees commited the unpardonable sin because they rejected the Christ, who is the highest level of revelation given that could save a person.

Also, to apply the 'unpardonable sin' to any believer at any time in history is a grave mistake. I say this with true sincerity. Amongst other reasons, this would go against an ENORMOUS amount of Scripture which argues that the grace of Christ is always more powerful than any sin, or any penalty of sin.

I hope my message helps to furthur the issue of discussion.

This question has also been posted on the Exposition and Bible Study board. I just posted this over there and will plagerize myself and post it here, in answer once again.

If you examine the immediate context as to what has been spoken about the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is attributing unto Satan the miracles performed by the Holy Spirit through Jesus during His ministry. In other words, by dismissing Jesus and His miracles, which attested to His being the Messiah, as the works of Satan, the Pharisees were taking recognition of the work of the Holy Spirit and giving the credit to the Evil One.

Can you commit blasphemy against the Holy Spirit today? I don't believe so, any miracles Jesus performs today are through His own power (which was laid aside during His incarnation) and not through the agency of the Holy Spirit.
