  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"I would like to just know if what it says in Matthew is true. It states that every sin is forgivable, except if a person speaks badly about the Holy Spirit. I have attended a private Christian school and one day my Bible teacher was saying that a person is not forgiven if he/she speaks against the Holy Spirit. As he stated that… I thought something against the Holy Spirit. I did not mean to… it just happened. I prayed and asked forgiveness, but does that mean I am forgiven or eternally condemned? SINCERELY WORRIED"

I think if one reads the passage in Matthew 12:31-37, you will find out the the unpardonable sins requires one to open and speak from his/her mouth. For we all would be in danger if our thoughts were held against us. If you had committed this sin, you would have no desire for Jesus. For Jesus states this sin comes from the heart (Matthew 12:34-37).

For a true believer will have a good and honest heart, and bring forth fruit with patience (Luke 8:15). It sound like to me, ByHISway, your heart is set on doing God's Will in Jesus Name by the Holy Spirit.

A footnote on this passage in the NET Bible Online Edition:

Whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. This passage has troubled many people, who have wondered whether or not they have committed this sin. Three things must be kept in mind: (1) the nature of the sin is to ascribe what is the obvious work of the Holy Spirit (e.g., releasing people from Satan’s power) to Satan himself; (2) it is not simply a momentary doubt or sinful attitude, but is indeed a settled condition which opposes the Spirit’s work, as typified by the religious leaders who opposed Jesus; and (3) a person who is concerned about it has probably never committed this sin, for those who commit it here (i.e., the religious leaders) are not in the least concerned about Jesus’ warning.

The passage is talking about something far deeper and more decisive than you are worried about.

A rule of thumb is that if you are worried about it then you are probably not guilty of the 'unforgivable sin'. You have to understand, the people who said Jesus cast out demons by the power of Satan were children of perdition. There is a point of no return from which you cannot repent, the reason being is that your will is permanently set against the things of God.

The reason that this sin is unforgivable is because the child of perdition is rejecting the basis of forgiveness, the washing, renewing and regeneration of the Holy Spirit.

Grace and peace,
Mark

I have been taught that the unforgivable sin is the the constant rejection of Christ. We can not control our thoughts, not to mention, we wrestle against principality and spiritual wickedness. So, I believe that we are attacked through our thoughts. That verse is Matthew 12:31, Jesus says that if you SPEAK against the holy spirit not think a thought. Many pastors believe that Jesus is referring to the constant rejection of the holy spirit. The Holy Spirit is our teacher and He also convicts us when we sin or thinking to sin. So, if you reject the Holy Spirit then you will not even repent or ask for forgiveness because you will reject His convictions.
I don't believe that a person who think a wicked thought against the Holy Spirit unwillingly is condemned.
