Has anyone seen this movie?

What are your thoughts?

I'm trying to produce a high concept Christian film. How much violence in a Chistian film would you tolerate? Would you be accepting of such scenes like in "The Exorcist" or "The Passion of the Christ"? Why or why not?

I haven't seen it yet but I'm considering it. All I'm sure of is that it would give me nightmares. Even the preview made me scream. :)

For a Christian film, I would not have a problem with violence (or sexuality, or language...) if it was relevant to the plot. Obviously, the scenes that made people wince and cry in "The Passion" were necessary violence, and without them the film would not have been at all accurate. If a movie was made were there was urgency/anxiety, or violence was used as a part of the plot, it would be fine, I just don't care for gratuitous violence. Sex and bad language is also acceptable to me if it has a reason for being there. Like, if a character used to swear and sleep around, but then became saved, it would make sense. Only when it's constant and useless does that stuff actually offend me.

I haven't seen The Unborn, but since I'm a horror fanatic, there's a pretty good chance I'll be seeing it at some point. As far violence, sex, language, etc. goes I have no problem with it if it is, as decadent stated, relevant to the plot. If such things are appropriate to the character, if they are a psychotic murderer I would expect them to be violent and hateful. If there is a mobster, I would wonder why he would say, "Oh pickles" if the cops showed up.

Gratuitous use of pretty much any plot aspect can be annoying. For instance, I am not a fan of the "torture porn" films like Hostel because of their needlessly sadistic violence and gore. After a while, I start to feel like I'm the one being tortured by a bad film.

Would a Christian film that portrays the nature of angels as they go around helping people and preaching the Word while demons are destoying lives, defame the name of God and do very violent acts be acceptable to Christian viewers? Would you watch it if all of these elements were in the movie and conveyed the message of the Gospel?

I would be hesitant to give a blanket answer for all Christians, "yes" or "no". I would be interested in such a thing, and I think if it is done well, could actually raise interest in non-Christian audiences.

Speaking of angels, Anne Rice is currently working on the first book in a series focusing on angels. I need to check, but I believe it's called "Seraphim" or something like that. I'm interested in seeing what she does with the concept.

Depending on what it is that you need to get across, any form or amount of violence can be needed. It's art, not real violence. Utilize everything when trying to evoke emotion in any way.

As for The Unborn... Odette Yustman is beautiful, but that's all the film had going for it. The story, characters, and dialogue were all pathetic. There wasn't anything enjoyable except having Yustman on the screen.

I know that both The Exorcist and Passion of the Christ were very effective films. I mean, look how important The Exorcist was/is to cinema. Everyone knows about it, everyone has been terrified by it at one point in their life, it's a very effective film and they did what needed to be done in order to succeed.

While I don't have a problem with violence per se, I think most of what Hollywood puts out is gratuitous violence. Same for sex and language. I mean, I spent 3 years as a firefighter and was surrounded by the most foul language people could come up with and yet, would it be a godly thing to do to put such language in a film just for the sake of realism. I'm mindful of Fireproof. they showed the firehouse playing pranks on each other which I loved because we had the hose-stretcher routine ourselves, as well as Ring Dings in the boots (as opposed to hotsauce) etc, however, the film worked great without the language and without a whole lot of blood and gore. Most people knows what goes on during a shooting/hostage situation, or car crashes. Most people know that there's a fair amount of cussing at sporting events, so why include it. Even substitute words can be grossly over done (look at BSG and their substitute for the F word). I feel the same way about sex in films. I don't get upset at it because I'm used to seeing it but even that isn't necessary. There are less explicit ways to let the viewer know something is going to happen. Don't get me wrong. I don't mind the whole kissing and caressing thing but is much beyond that necessary? Is any of the above necessary in a Christian film when a talented scriptwriter and director and set of actors can let the viewer know what's going on without taking things to the extreme? Just a thought.
