  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hell has a bad reputation, even among Christians. It is often thought of as a necessary evil, an affront to the goodness and love of God. Some think that God was somehow forced by his nature or circumstance to tolerate the existence of Hell. Even some of the most devout Christians see Hell as an embarrassment.

But I tell you that Hell is a holy place. The creation and perpetuation of Hell is good, righteous, and loving. And if you believe the Bible is God's word and the historical doctrines of Hell are correct, then you ought to agree with me.

1. According to the Bible, God is perfect, good, holy, righteous, and loving. God's every action and act of creation share these qualities.

2. Although everything that God creates is good, some things such as Angels, humankind and the Earth have fallen and are no longer good. However, Hell has never fallen from the goodness of God's creation.

3. The purpose of Hell is for the torment of God's fallen enemies. This suffering is punitive, not restorative. In Hell, there is no way to be restored to fellowship with God. If Hell's purpose of torment is not good then God is not good.

4. God is not “forced” to torment his enemies, nor is this something “unavoidable” as if God was double-minded. God sovereignly chose to create Hell and shows no regret about it. Note that God has had regrets, but Hell is not one of them.

5. Any attempt to explain or justify God's creation of Hell will fall short of the truth because we cannot fully understand Him. Nevertheless, Hell does not lose its goodness when we fail to understand/appreciate it.

6. Since only God is good, only God can be the standard of goodness. Thus, God's Hell must be good and God's torment of his enemies must be good. You can only disagree by rejecting the Biblical revelation of God and Hell.

7. If you cannot fully love Hell, then you cannot fully embrace its Creator. A better understanding of the holy goodness of Hell will help you become more mature in Christ. It is worth your study and meditation.

I would take issue with #5. Seems to me God created Hell as a matter of justice. He sends people to hell to satisfy the demands of justice in light of His holiness and their many sins.

Seems Holy and love in the same sentence with hell just does not sit well me. I get what you are trying to say however I believe it is a bit misguided. Hell is basically a metaphor for the "second death", a condition caused by the unrighteous who reject God and remain in sin until death. Hell is the adsence of God, void of His presence. Void of everlasting life. Hell is the absence of the Kingdom of God . Every eye will know Him on the last day and His righteous judgment will be Holy. This judgment is the " second death" a judgment of the unrighteous own making. So hell is the creation of the wicked.
Blessings

Bible verses are not evidence of correct faith. Satan himself is well versed. The traditional doctrine of Hell has been well established for centuries. You can only refute by rejecting the Bible or mis-using it.

I respect your position but I don't think it fits the Biblical examples of torment in flames and being eaten by worms, unable to find relief. God's torment of his enemies = his holy presence in midst of their unrighteousness. Hell (in my opinion) is not the void of God but the continual unrelenting wrath of his presence among his defeated enemies.

Most people greatly underestimate the power of the glory of God, the agony of being in his presence, yet unprotected by his mercy.

The mere presence of Jesus makes some demons cry out in agony. How much more tormenting will Christ's purity and glory torment them in their place of shame and destruction.

So, being evil gets one into hell, but sinning per se doesn't?
Why would you ask such a question? Why would you think it would be answered? Go set your traps elsewhere.

One of the great failures of Christians, though quite natural in the absence of good biblical teaching, is to correctly understand that the offer of salvation is only temporary. We are living in the time of God's favor, when God offers peace to his enemies if they will submit. But there is day of vengeance coming and the offer of peace will end. That is roughly the time of the second coming of Christ (or perhaps the end of the Millenial Kingdom).
Here is the prophecy:
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God
,

God's vengeance is coming and it will entail death, judgment, and hell for his enemies. This was the message of John the Baptist and Jesus and the early church. The day is coming when God's love, patience, and mercy will be withdrawn from his enemies and they will experience the fullness of his wrath.

No one can be mature in Christ if they reject this major element of salvation.

i don't know what kind of compassion you must have to 'love' hell.
I think God hated hell, because he sent his only son so people doesn't go there.
If God hates Hell, then you must conclude that God hates himself for creating hell and tormenting people.

You might ask how does Hell show God's love? Well, it doesn't show love to those being tormented in Hell. God has already withdrawn his offer of love to them. But, God is not just tormenting his enemies, he is also tormenting our enemies. He is bringing justice to those who have wronged us and paying them back for the evil they have done to us.

God shows his love for us by bringing eternal justice upon our enemies. God is the true Avenger. This is a major theme of the Bible.

Now you might say that you have no desire to see your enemies punished. but that is not up to you. God has promised to bring justice to his people and vengeance to his enemies. Are you really going to deny his Word and tell Him that you have a better way?

And there are also many who say "I refuse to believe in a vengeful God". Fine, find another god, I am innocent of your blood. In the end, the real God will find you and give you what you deserve.

God is love says the bible, i prefer that version. 'Slow to get angry and with much mercy'.
I don't adhere to calvinism anyway i think you come from that place?.
I tried to understand that version of the gospel, it only created pain and torment.

God sent his son to be sacrificied so people don't go there.
Yes, but God made Hell and actively torments people there. Do you think God hates that? Is God doing what he hates? My position is that God wants to save all and offers salvation to all, but to those who refuse it or ignore it, God is not going to feel bad about tormenting them. God does what he pleases, he is not compelled by external forces or internal contradictions. Thus, such torment is good and right in his eyes.

Why would you ask such a question? Why would you think it would be answered? Go set your traps elsewhere.
It's not a trap. I'm just trying to see if you thought this thing through.
6. Since only God is good, only God can be the standard of goodness. Thus, God's Hell must be good and God's torment of his enemies must be good. You can only disagree by rejecting the Biblical revelation of God and Hell.
I don't buy this precept. If an omnipotent being says that tormenting their created beings eternally is a good thing, that doesn't actually make it good, it makes the being insane. Many people simply live lives of sinning in ignorance, as a child would (Yes, children lie, steal swear and other sins because of a tough environment, etc.), that doesn't mean they are in rebellion against God, or God's enemies.
