From G5011; to depress; figuratively to humiliate (in condition or heart): - abase, bring low, humble (self).

This is something no one likes to do, to humble ourselves to other people, and to God. We like to be in the front of the pack, so everyone can see what we have done.
So, to answer your question, it is to serve everyone else, and put yourself last. To look for ways to help your neighbor, at the cost of yourself.
Motive is how we know if we are humble-who are we doing it for?

I thought it would be interesting to find out what the general consensus is on this.
What to you think is being humble?
Who are the true humble?
How do you determine between the true and the false humility?
You are trully humble when you lose your pride but
still keeping your dignity.

Look at the example of Christ for humility. For every good attribute as well.

He always pointed to God for all things.
He was a servant to all, to the point of washing the disciples feet.
He was not arrogant or puffed up in any way.
He was always forgiving and loving.

Humility is impossible to do on our own, which is why we need the filling of the Holy Spirit to empower us to live lives of humility.

I picked my username because of my humility. I've learned that true humility is allowing God to control and command every part of my life, and since He has authority over my life now, I have chosen to 'lower' myself before him.
This is only my opinion so far, but I don't think you can truly understand what humility is until you realize that you are a sinner worthy of being humiliated the way Jesus was at his crucifixion. And because Jesus was humiliated for us, and because he arose of the dead he is worthy of honour, and worthy to be my lord. And he can only be my lord if I lower myself before him. Humility happens when you realize that there is someone who has more authority than you and that you can't do things right without the leadership and guidance from this authority, and so you then choose to let this authority guide and lead and command you.
You can tell who's truly humble by their motives. Some ppl just refuse to do something when they're asked to do a favour. Some ppl do the favour just because there is something in it for them, they have that selfish motive still there. But true humility happens when you do what you are asked without expecting a thing in return. I believe Paul teaches something like that.

The true humble also are those who take initiative to do survice for others and still don't expect a thing in return.

Some verses to ponder:

Humilty

Proverbs 13:10
Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

Proverbs 11:2
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 18:12
Before his downfall a man's heart is proud, but humility comes before honor.

Ecclesiastes 7:8
The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.

Philippians 2:1 Imitating Christ's Humility
1If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others[ Imitating Christ's Humility ] If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,

1 Peter 3:8
Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.

Colossians 3:12
Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Titus 3:2
to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.

James 3:13
[ Two Kinds of Wisdom ] Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

1 Peter 5:5
Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

Matthew 11:29
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 18:4
Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 23:12
For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

1 Peter 5:6
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

Ephesians 4:2
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

TRUE humiliy is teachability.

Humility is not humiliation or mortification.

Prov 15:33, “The fear [respect for] the Lord is instruction for wisdom, and before honor comes humility.”

There is no honor without humility. Respect for the Lord is the prerequisite for humility. Humility is the prerequisite for honor in the Christian way of life. Respect for the Lord is personal love for God, one of the characteristics of spiritual self-esteem. No believer can have honor or integrity in his life without the virtue of humility.

Prov 11:2, “When arrogance comes, then comes dishonor; but with the humble is wisdom.” The only basis for having wisdom in life is through humility.

Prov 29:23, “A person’s arrogance will bring him low, but a spirit of humility will attain honor.”

Humility is first of all a mental attitude directed toward yourself. Then it is a mental attitude directed toward other people. Above all, humility is a mental attitude directed toward legitimate authority in life.

Humility is the means by which the plan of God is executed, for humility is one of the productions of the Holy Spirit.

Humility is teachability, Ps 25:8-9, “Good and honorable is the Lord; therefore, He instructs sinners in the way. In justice [divine integrity] He guides the humble; consequently, He teaches the humble His way [plan, purpose].”

No believer in the cosmic system can learn doctrine; gnosis never becomes epignosis. Without humility there is no teachability. Teachability demands enforced humility and genuine humility.

Ever since I saw this post this morning, I wanted to post something...... but the database errors interfered.....

Here it is:

Now the man Moses was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.
(Numbers 12:3)

I believe that the humble person is the one who doesn't second-guess his destiny - whether it's high or low in the eyes of men. A humble person is steadfast and faithful in his assignment, obedient to the Lord and accountable to any in position over him.

Another example of humility - Paul.

For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are prudent in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are distinguished, but we are without honor. To this present hour we are both hungry and thirsty, and are poorly clothed, and are roughly treated, and are homeless; and we toil, working with our own hands; when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure; when we are slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become as the scum of the world, the dregs of all things, even until now.
1 Cor.4:9-13

Boyyy am I learning that lesson now.....

To be humble is to know that we are nothing and Christ is everything.
It is not pretense, but giving ourselves to Christ.
It is not proud of ourselves, but giving thanks to the Lord in everything.
We know if we are truly humble or not.
If we are not sure, we can ask the Lord.
He knows men's hearts.
We do not.
We should not try to judge others.

I think only God knows if somebody is really humble because we can't read peoples hearts. We don't know if somebody is acting humble when they really aren't.

I guess I'm trying to say that their fruit will help us see if it's real or fake.
But I still leave it up to God to judge their heart because sometimes we think people are arrogant when they are very sincere and it could be us that's misjudging them in our error.

Only God is truly humble! :)

Amen to that! And when we seem to exhibit any qualities of humility in our own lives (few and far between for me, I am afraid), it is God's character shining through in spite of us.

Not in SPITE of us!
It's as we surrender, submit, yield;
Trust, rest, abide :)

All the while knowing who's Life this is! :D
