I think that the Trail of Blood is a product of the ideas of Restorationism that was popular starting in the 1820s. The thinking was that the church should return to the teachings and practices of the early church because of views that the Catholic and Reformation origins of most Christian groups were riddled with human corruption. The ability to show direct historical lineage that would exclude Catholicism and Reformational influences would justify existing churches as authoritative and free of "corruption".

Dr. Carroll was a baptist born in 1858 and was probably strongly influenced by these ideas and set out to historically justify that claim. While he presents some interesting ideas for where sources of baptist traditions may have come from, the ideas presented in Trail of Blood and other forms of Landmarkism do not present an honest historical view of Baptist history and their claims are extremely weakly supported by historical evidence and are often contrary to the historical evidence of how those doctrines and teachings came to be accepted by modern baptist churches.

Baptist histories that are more consistent with historical evidence.
