John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.
I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

We find this work of the enemy in the parable, and also the work of the flesh.
Luke 8:
11
Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.
12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes
away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy;
and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.

14 Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out
and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity.

15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.

We must make right choices by walking in the Spirit of Truth
1 John 2:
15
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world,
the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and
the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.

Of course, all of these things are at the disposal of the enemy,
the prince of this world.

1 John 4:
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because
He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world,
and the world hears them.
6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God
does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
