You said it again. I can't believe it. No kidding, I admire you for that. You've been around here long enough to see how hard some Christians work to keep from admitting faith underlies much of what they say. Now, if you were stupid or a nut case, it wouldn't mean much. But you're not. For you to lay your faith on the table so unashamedly might suggest there's more to it that some of us are seeing.

I find this the great contradiction in most Creationist presentation. They are trying to use science to establish something that can, ultimately, only be accepted on faith. You can not logic your way to God. Yet, a very great number of highly logical people (and I like to count myself among them), have that faith. This is the basis behind what I wrote about ID in this thread:

http://www.christianforums.com/t1611121-a-question-about-evolution-vs-intelligent-design.html

To try to set up Chritian faith as something you can "prove", then when it is shown that it can NOT be proven, then all you have done is damage the message. It makes no sense. It is the ultimate God of the gaps.

I'm talking about the flood stories. The Sumerian global flood story which is featured in The Epic of Gilgamesh, which predates the writing of Genesis by about 1,000 years.

Since this topic came up earlier on another thread [link above], I thought it would be a good topic to "resurrect" and discuss

How can ya tell? :)
I don't think it takes a Rhodes scholar to see that Nimrod wasn't even present during the Flood; but Shem ... who lived right up to the time of Jacob ... was.

As I have said before, I can envision Shem and Nimrod have one doosey of an argument over "Nimrod's garbage".

Probably going something like this:

Shem: What's this trash you wrote, Nimrod; are you okay!?
Nimrod: Don't start on me again, uncle; you've always looked down on us Hamites.
Shem: That's garbage too! You used to be a mighty hunter before the LORD, what went wrong?
Nimrod: You think you Shemites are so much better than us, just because my grandfather was cursed for what his father did to your father in that tent that day.
Shem: I watched you grow up, Nimrod, and how you used to love the LORD so much; but somewhere along the line you went astray and broke away from the rest of us and went and formed your own little empire. Well ... you do what you want, but as long as I live, I'll make sure my eyewitness testimony trumps your lies.
Nimrod: And what makes you an authority on the Flood over me?
Shem: I was there! Remember??? I was on the Ark ... you weren't!
Nimrod: Oh, that's right ... somehow I forgot ... what with there being no evidence and all.
Shem: [facepalms]

Genesis account was almost assuredly based on an oral version being told by the Hebrews before it was written, and that it was not just dropped on the Genesis writer as a new revelation and I don't think anyone disputes this.
Actually the experts believe that the first part of Genesis was copied from clay tablets because of the structure of the words. Moses had every book written at the time available to him. Even after his study in Egypt his father in law was a priest and Moses learned a lot from him. They say the library was destroyed in Alexandria but it was sold to pay war debts. Those original tablets could be hidden away in a monastery somewhere.

All while crawling on his belly eating dirt, too! What a guy!
Ya ... Satan elected to stay in that dragon when the dragon lost his legs and hit the dirt, didn't he?

OK, so you are now taking the position that Satan took over the mind/body of the poor serpent-dragon-beast? Why was the serpent-dragon-beast then punished by God?

For allowing it.

LOL. For allowing the Prince of lies and decept for taking over his poor litle mind and body? Why was Lucifer thrown down to Earth with us and the poor little dragon-beast again?? Just to torment us with him, and then punish us for allowing it?? And this all makes perfect sense to you, does it????

He's called the 'father of lies' ... he's the 'prince of the power of the air' in Ephesians 2:2.

But what's with the 'poor little' all of a sudden? are you trying to emphasize something?
Why was Lucifer thrown down to Earth with us and the poor little dragon-beast again??
Lucifer's assignment ... whatever it was ... was here on earth.
Just to torment us with him, and then punish us for allowing it??
No.
And this all makes perfect sense to you, does it????
Your version doesn't; you're trying too hard to make God out to be the Wicked One.

My version makes pluperfect sense.

Hmmm... sounds like Greek mythology... coincidence? I think not!

Yes, the poor guy is one of the victims of Satan, yet he was punished for it!

Lucifer's assignment ... whatever it was ... was here on earth.
To do what, other than torment us and the serpent? Why didn't God send him to Pluto instead (or somewhere else)?

I'm trying to make sense out of your beliefs and am really finding it hard! Is it just me??

No, I really don't think you're trying to make sense out of it.

You're bouncing 'Satan' and 'Lucifer' and 'the serpent-beast' around; and doing it out of chronological order to boot.

Let's set the record straight:

1. God created Lucifer.
2. God created earth.
3. God assigned Lucifer a job on earth, associated with the Garden of Eden.*
4. Lucifer rebelled and became Satan.
5. Satan entered a serpent-beast, possibly Eve's favorite pet.
6. The Fall occurred.

* What Lucifer's job was, I don't know. One supposition I adhere to is that it was Lucifer's job to provide musical worship of some sort, while also tending the Tree of Knowledge, which grew fruit for his fellow angels to enjoy.

Now ... let's see how serious you are about understanding.

Seeing how rock n' roll is the devil's music, this makes so much sense now. :p

Any idea what Eve may have named her pet serpent-beast? Slither? Puff? Ssssnakers? Scaly? Sam?
