I believe it was a historical event. Whether it was global or local I don't know, I've heard both viewpoints from teachers I respect. How many people believe the story of Nah's Ark, as recorded in the bible, is an actual historical event.
It's a story that children enjoy if the number of toy arks sold down through the years is anything to go by. But what about the grown ups, do they really believe it actually happened exactly as the bible says?
Jesus spoke of it as a historical event, as do writers of the New Testament. The Jewish historian Josephus also wrote of it and connected the descendants of the flood survivors to the nations surrounding Israel. So in that time it was considered historical.
