I believe it has something to do with - David was appointed by God as the king of Israel, to protect the Holy City, that is why he was never defeated in battle, David was protecting the land for Jesus to continue his work in. Im sure someone who knows more will be able to give us more details .. HELP!

David was an ancestor of Jesus - that's what Matthew 1 is all about.

But it goes deeper than that - David is looked on as the ideal king, and the expectation in the Old Testament is that a descendant of David is going to reign one day, and that he will sort everything out. We know now that this is Jesus.

In Psalm 2, for example, it's talking firstly about Israelite kings - David and his descendants:

The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers gather together
against the LORD
and against his Anointed One...

The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord scoffs at them.
Then he rebukes them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
"I have installed my King
on Zion, my holy hill."
We should be able to see, however, that it applies to Jesus as well! "Anointed One" is the translation of 'Christ'...

Lastly, later on in the Old Testament we see the expectation of one of David's offspring coming:
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders...
Of the increase of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David's throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
(Isaiah 9:6-7)

Why is Jesus referred to as "The Son of David"? What does this mean?
The simplest answer is; Jesus is called the Son of David to show He is the rightful heir to the throne of Israel.
If He's not from David's line He's not entitled to claim the throne.

I believe it is a Jewish idiom used primarily (exclusively?) when the first intended audience is Jewish. It speaks, and mentioned above, to Christ's biological descent from the line of David, the only rightful heirs to the throne of Israel, but also, it points to the OT prophesies of Messiah. I may be a bit off on that last one but that is my current understanding. I think it was important to establish the legitimacy of Jesus' right to the throne of Israel.

You might want to check out some Bible commentaries dealing with the passages that mention 'Son of David'. I would recommend some, but now that I am thinking about it, I can't remember which ones to recommend.
