  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know of at least one other member in the forums who's a Slayers fan. Anyone else? ^_^

I'm primarily a fan of the anime. I actually consider TRY my favorite, although they seriously dropped the ball on that one with their attempts at humor. Because TRY is far darker than the first two seasons, I think the humor got overblown in an attempt to compensate for that. They shouldn't have tried so hard, IMHO. It would have better if they went with darker humor, playing within the same scale as the rest of the season. The contrast is just a bit too much.

Who're your favorite pairings? I don't have any pairings I'm rabidly fanatical about, and I'll say right now up front: I mock people who get rabidly fanatical about their pet pairings of choice to the point where they attack and flame others in the fandom for liking anything different. It's a fandom, and it's a really big sandbox. There's room enough for all of us to play in our own little corners. ^_^

I'm generally Trad, although I can go with Alt on a whim. I'm pretty much set for Lina/Gourry, because they, going by not just the anime, but the mangas and novels as well, are canon. Zelgadis and Amelia, I prefer that pairing, but I've got a fanfic in my head getting worked out for Amelia/Valgaav. How'm I pulling that one off -- long story. It'll be a tricky maneuver, but I've been writing fanfic long enough and I've pulled off some pretty nigh-impossible 'fic twists that I'm confident with being able to do that.

Now Filia - I'm sure y'all can tell by seeing my sig I'm a huge Filia fan. ^_^ I like both primary Filia pairings: Filia/Xellos and Filia/Val (or Filia/Valgaav). Too bad Xellos and Valgaav hate each other passionately, or I could have some fun with a polyamorous three-way 'fic pairing there. ::pops in a Judds CD, starts singing:: "Love can build a bridge... between your 'ship and mine...Love can build a bridge... don't you think it's time..."

</random weirdness>

Martina's kinda grown on me as a character. I used to detest her, but she's just so wonderfully insane. "Zoamelgustar!" ...or however it's spelled.

My dirty little secret when it comes to 'ships is Dynast/Dolphin. I know, I know, I know they're Mazoku and love's a bad, bad emotion for Mazoku, but... like I said, my dirty little secret. ^_^ I've already indulged in that guilty pleasure with the 'fic "The Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean".

Anyhow, I've babbled enough about my favorite fandom for now. Who wants the floor?

hey Zanne Chaos ;)

my fav is NEXT, and you're right about TRY, it's just so different from the other two series, so serious towards the end (becoming a more of a RPG with the defeat of some monstrous evil). I think it also lacks a bit of humour compared to the others.

Filia and Xellos! lol. I can't forget that first meeting of theirs.. it surprised me that Xellos could get agitated when i first saw TRY, he never lost his cool in NEXT. That part about the combined power of good and evil is pretty neat (Filia and Xellos), don't you think?

::nodnod:: Filia and Xellos never cease to amuse me, even when I'm writing Xel as a baddie. I just adore that, how she could get under his skin like not even Martina could.

I've debated with anti-X/F people before over this, where it's said that hate cannot become love. I say hate can be a good cover-up for unresolved sexual tension ::snerks:: I mean, just lookit Maddie Hayes and David Addison from early seasons of Moonlighting, or even better yet, Benedict and Beatrice in the first half or so of Much Ado About Nothing. Read some of their exchanges, and picture Xellos and Filia saying them.

...I should probably repost a discussion I have permission to post off a Val/Filia mailing list when we were still doing the TRY-rewatch (currently on hold, due to conflicting schedules). We were discussing Xellos and Filia's interactions in the early episodes (4 & 5, namely) and what that revealed about their characters.

What I really loved when I was doing the rewatch and transcribing the episodes, I was forced to stop and think about the characters, and I realized how much Amelia's matured, and that Gourry actually doesn't come across half as stupid as it's said he does in that season. In one episode, I think it was 2 or 3, he came across as the more mature and intelligent of the lot of them. ::laughs::

Slayers Next is my favorite of the three TV series too, but I love the other two too. Try is my least favorite, but I still like it quite a bit. I agree that the humor worked better in the first two series. I have seen the first Slayers movie and some OVAs and I liked them too, though I wish Nagha wore a bit more clothes. I also liked the TV series much better than the OVAs/Movie. Zel, Gourry, Amelia, Prince Phil, Xelloss, and Martina are much more entertaining than Nagha. I actually like her laugh, though.

No Zel? *sob* He's my favorite Slayers character... Slayers without Zel is like.... Full Metal Panic without Sagara, or Jungle Girl Guu without Guu, or Hellsing without Alucard....

Gourry often comes of as more mature then Lina and Amelia for some reason.
I haven't heard about that, but there are more Slayers movies coming here soon and most of them don't have the supporting cast from the TV series and have a character named Nagha instead. The last Slayers movie does have the supporting cast from the TV series (including Amelia and Zel) and Nagha, though, as far as I know, still no Syphiel.

The dub of Slayers TV changed the VAs for Amelia and Zelgadis mid season, probably becuase the first VAs were horrible. Zel and Ameila are in the second and third seasons of Slayers TV too, but the first dub VAs for them aren't (which is a good thing).

well, the Slayers movie i know so far are horrible.... just my opinion. Anyway, it feels a bit weird to watch a movie that does not have any of the original characters, except Lina.

hey Sensei, Zel is my fav character too!

true, and of course, more funny bits when Gourry turns sensable, :D
and Amelia is not so quick to judge.

Oh, I love the Slayers. Mmm.. as for pairings, I'd say I like either Gourry and Lina or Lina and Xellos. I was extatic to find an anime where the main heroin doesn't have a huge bouncy chest. lol. That bugs the heck outta me. But then I saw Naga. o_O;;; But for some reason I don't mind her that much. I love that funky "ooh-hoh-hoh-hoh" laugh that she does. lol.
