  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Will those who are cast into the lake of fire burn forever?

12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Rev. 20:12-15

Is there any significance to the fact that the sea is not being thrown into the lake of fire when death and Hades are? They are all giving up their dead after all!

Great question. If I'm not mistaken, when you see the sea referred to in such a way, the reference is not to the oceans, but rather the sea of humanity. Meaning the people who are still alive but spiritually dead. That sea of humanity will give up its living dead(those alive living without Christ).

And they like the ones who have already died without Christ, will be cast into the lake.

If the reference was just to those who drowned in the oceans, why not also mention those who drowned in the lakes and rivers and streams who were never recovered?

I must further review Scripture to see what it says on the matter. :)

i think it is pretty simple. this is probably the bibles clearest topic. everytime the bible refers to the second death it also has the word forever attached to it every time. EVERY single time.

Revelation 14:9 . Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand,
10. "he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. And he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb.
11. "And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.''

This appears to only apply to those who worshipped the antichrist/satan

Revelation 20:10 : And the devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

Obviously the lake of fire does torment them forever however the meaning of the word in the greek for forever can mean either for perpetuity or an age of messianism untill the end of the world and in the very next chapter of revelation , it states that there would be a new heaven and earth and the old had passed away and there would be a drying of all tears and that there would be NO more death , no more mourning that all the former things had passed away . So I believe at some point , there is just complete destruction of the lake of fire and everything in it , it even goes on in chapter 21 that all in the lake of fire would suffer a second death , and death means the end of being alive , the first death being physical death and the second being spiritual death , total lack of awareness of anything , gone .

Well done Angel. But you also mentioned the torment to the end of ages. Are you suggesting that they will be tormented until the new heaven and earth are formed, and then they are just gone?

Because it couldn't possibly mean that the damned have fulfilled their punishments and are free to leave, right? :/

I dunno... it seems most Christians want to believe that all unbelievers will either be tormented until the end of time, or simply poof out of existence (or in this case, one followed by the other). Or maybe I'm just cynical.

And God shall show up on his formal occasions uninvited, and walk around the room making comments and addressing people with wrong names and he will feel really awkward. So there."

Yes , from the context of all the verses on the subject , and what it says in revelation chapter 21 , it appears that once the age is completed all things are made new and that those tormented in the lake of fire will only be untill all things are fulfilled and completed - then all eyes will be dried , all old things passed away and all those in the lake of fire and even the lake of fire itself will be destroyed - totally gone , at an utmost end to be remembered no more . But that is still a long time away .....

No , it doesnt mean this , because all punishment has already been fulfilled . When Christ died on the cross , all sin , past present and future was already paid for , all was nailed to the cross and He paid for it all , every last one . Redemption was already purchased for anyone who will receive it . The punishment received in hell and the lake of fire is the punishment for rejecting the payment, for rejecting Christ , not punishment to pay for what you nor anyone else could ever pay , that was already paid through Christ . No one goes to hell to pay for sin , they go for rejecting what was paid and who paid for it - Christ .

Romans 6:4. Therefore we {those who believe} were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
6. knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
7. For he who has died has been freed from sin.
8. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
9. knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.
10. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

Hebrews 9:11. But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.
12. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
13. For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh,
14. how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

I dunno... it seems most Christians want to believe that all unbelievers will either be tormented until the end of time, or simply poof out of existence (or in this case, one followed by the other). Or maybe I'm just cynical.

It isnt a want to see anyone destroyed , even Jesus wept for those who refused the truth , its about the truth itself , the bible is clear that this will happen and anyone who desires the truth will believe what it says - Christ himself spoke about it .

Matthew 25:
40. "And the King will answer and say to them, `Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.'
41. "Then He will also say to those on the left hand, `Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:
42. `for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;
43. `I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.'
44. "Then they also will answer Him, saying, `Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?'
45. "Then He will answer them, saying, `Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.'
46. "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.''

But notice there as to the topic of the OP , that the righteous are granted ETERNAL life , but it doesnt say eternal for punishment - it gives the word everlasting in the english which again like in relevation the greek word means untill the end of the age , not eternally .

Death is a lack of existance - can you tell me why God would grant a *poof * into heaven when one already decided that they do not want God and has rejected Christ? Would you force someone to be in your house who doesnt want to be there and has already decided that they would rather be dead than to be raised to life?

Payment is made - God has warned us whats to come - there will be no excuse , we have this life , then we are judged , but those that are in Christ have already passed from death into life , because that judgment for sin happened at the cross .

I wanted to add one more thing - I believe that the torment suffered there is the knowledge of just how many times one knew the truth in their heart of hearts , yet still refused to receive it - the torment of anguish in the spirit of knowing one knew the truth , of just how many times they could have received it , and how many times they rejected it - how easy it could have been for them to receive what was offered to them and weeping because of their own sorrow of knowing the truth and thirsting for the truth (Christ the living water) and gnashing their teeth (grinding them in anguish over their loss ). Like when the rich man says 'I thirst' and wants more than anything to let others (his brothers ) know the truth of what they are rejecting in their lives .

Wow. I have to agree with this 100%.

While my opinion is still not cemented on the subject of near death experiences or visions of Hell (I'm keeping an open mind about these), I've read many accounts of each.

Among the accounts of visions of Hell, there was always one common element.

The souls who were there all suffered torment by the fact that they had opportunities to receive the Truth of the Gospel, yet didn't. This was on top of the other torments they suffered.

How awful must it be to exist in a state with no chance of ever having hope of life again, and all the while knowing that you had a chance to excape these torments, but rejected it.

Suppose that person would be perfectly happy to be in your house, only he doesn't believe it exists because there's absolutely no proof of it.

It's not about us heathen sinners not wanting to go to heaven and be with this God fellow.

Well you have a conscience that points to its existance , you can look around at creation that also points to it . I cannot read your heart and dont know what is in it , whats been there or will be there in your lifetime , but one thing i do know is that when one stands before God , there will never be one person who can say they never knew there was a creator or had a chance to know Him .

Only you know whats happened in your heart and if you purge the knowledge you are given . These are what I am speaking of when I speak of the torment of all the times the truth was given and rejected .

i looked and there IS refrence to the second death after the new heaven and new earth they mention the new heaven and new earth in revelation 21:1.

however revlation 21:8 makes refrence to the lake of fire so with this info i don't think the theory here is correct.

however revelation 21:1 DOES say there will no longer be any sea. i don't know if this means the lake of fire or what, but my mind is VERY intrested in this subject

yes , there is reference to the lake of fire there , but says it is the second death , like i said before death means the end of existance , there is physical death , but then there is spiritual death , the only thing we still after physical death is spirit - once there is spiritual death , there is no more existance . Its because of death and hell and the lake of fire being obliterated that there are no more tears , and all things have become new - there is no more sea because as zaac stated before there is no more sea of humanity because all that is left are Gods children and God all things being new , no more sin , no more death , no more hell , no more lake of fire .

Note above i also gave this reference of Christs words which also distinguish between
Eternal and everlasting - the words everlasting and forever mean in greek to the end of the age or world or messianic rule , it would cease to exist after Christs millenial reign when the world and everything else is made new after satan is released again for a time , then all things are remade .

Note this from above on the same topic : Matthew 25:
42. `for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;

If it were to be eternal lake of fire literally meaning everlasting , there would not be another word used instead of the one used for the word eternal . The word has more than one meaning , one being literally always , before and after never ending - ie eternal and the other means till the ending of the world - strongs even lists world as part of the definition .
Strong's Ref. # 166
Romanized aionios
Pronounced ahee-o'-nee-os
from GSN0165; perpetual (also used of past time, or past and future as well):
KJV--eternal, for ever, everlasting, world (began).

In the case there of everlasting , the meaning would be from the time of the begining of the world to the end of the world .
The reference compares also to this word used in revelation about the lake of fire where it says their torment rises up forever : trong's Ref. # 165
Romanized aion
Pronounced ahee-ohn'
from the same as GSN0104; properly, an age; by extension, perpetuity (also past); by implication, the world; specially (Jewish) a Messianic period (present or future):
KJV--age, course, eternal, (for) ever(-more), [n-]ever, (beginning of the, while the) world (began, without end). Compare GSN5550.
Clearly in reference with both words , it would mean to the end of the age , or the end of the current world , the word used in the literal english says age instead of forever :
10.
|2532| And
|3588| the
|1228| Devil
|4105| misleading
|0846| them
|0906| was thrown
|1519| into
|3588| the
|3041| Lake
|4442| of Fire
|2532| and
|2303| sulphur,
|3699| where
|3588| the
|2342| beast
|2532| and
|3588| the
|5578| false prophet
|9999| {were}.
|2532| And
|0928| they will be tormented
|2250| day
|2532| and
|3571| night
|1519| to
|3588| the
|0165| ages king james and nkjv say forever here , but the literal word is age , not forever or everlasting , only lasting till the end of the current age
|3588| of the
|0165| ages.

By seeing the correct word meaning in the original language and combining it with all things being made new and being no more death and mourning - weeping for those who have been lost because its all over and all things are made new , the end of the age has occured and it is merely being reiterated who will not be in the new heaven and earth , all those who HAD their part in the lake of fire , who now have ceased to exist because they suffered a SECOND death and spiritual death would be the end of spiritual existance since physical death is the end of physical existance .
