  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

No.
In that scenario, BOTH parties are culpable whatever the cowardly leaders may be telling you.

LOL!!! What is complicated about that solution? What is too difficult for you to understand?

How about you START addressing the disgusting steps taken by Republicans to stop money going to poor people?
Voting Yes to fund the government and keep SNAP operational doesn't stop money going to poor people. Voting No does that.
(Hint: The Republicans are voting yes, and the dems are voting no).

Are you talking about the Bill the Democrats put forward to rescue SNAP funding? BEcause that works too.

It's the current way. The dems choose to keep the govt. closed and SNAP benefits (along with pay to federal workers) cut off. That shows how concerned they really are about the poor, and the federal workers.

Actually, them providing legislation that would avoide the SNAP benefit fiasco proves the opposite and the Republicans refusal to pass it shows what you claim.

The article in an earlier post of mine also laid out OTHER legislation steps that "the party with all the power" COULD take....so more evidence Republicans don't care.

The way I see it, the CR is there to pay the bills and keep the doors open. When paying the bills, you do not add extra spending. It is like having an envelope to hold your monthly expenses, and your husband adds a bill for a four-wheeler. "We are not paying the bills until I get a 4-wheeler!" So we don't pay the bills. The water gets shut off, the electricity gets shut off, and the mortgage goes into default. You can have a four-wheeler... but not out of the monthly expenses.

The fact remains that the Republican spending bill passed in the House and awaits the cooperation of just five Democrats to keep the government funded and funds flowing to the poor, and to all of the federal workers who are now working without pay. The Democrats need to stop using the poor as leverage.

That was a very good analogy! Then the husband can blame the wife by saying, " If only you would have let me have a 4 wheeler, We wouldn't be without electricity and getting kicked out on the street, and the kids wouldn't be starving. This is all your fault!"

That's incorrect. SNAP benefits can, and always have, continued during a shutdown. The correct answer is Trump and Republican leadership. The Senate majority leader even refused to vote on a proposal to keep SNAP funded brought forward by a Republican senator and 11 Republican co-sponsors.
The solution to that is for the Democrats to end the shutdown they started.

Or the Republicans could just feed the poor with one of the options available to them. Then Dems wouldn't even be ABLE to use the poor as leverage and you'd take away a bargaining chip.

IF you ACTUALLY wanted to help the poor....

The Republicans are indeed using one of the options available to them. They are all voting in unison to reopen the government.
Perhaps the Democrats should consider using that option. It only takes 5 of them. I'm sure they can manage that.

ok....and the other 3 or 4?

It's funny how you keep trying to shift blame when Republicans, again, have FAR more power in this situation to feed the poor.

And that's how they fulfilled 52 of the 60 votes required to pass the funding. Since a few democrats have realized what's important, it only takes 5 more. I know that's a lot to ask. But hey! If the public gets fed up with all this, maybe they'll vote for 5 more Republicans to be Senators in the mid-terms, and then the government will actually be functional again and we won't have to put up with this garbage anymore.

yeah.... "maybe"
One month later, Republicans still can’t avoid blame for the government shutdown
Public blames GOP more than Democrats for shutdown ahead of SNAP funding deadline

But really.... Why are you upset?

Poor people aren't getting their SNAP funds. Why aren't you over the moon?

The Democrat's initiative to provide SNAP funding could have had their support too if you were concerned about the poor.
They should have initiative to not only provide SNAP funding, but also start paying federal workers. Why pick-and-choose who gets federal funding and who doesn't? The Republican spending bill provides all the funding, with no leverage being sought against any group. How 'bout that?

Hold on. Thanks to this government, DOGE, and it's tax cuts, you guys are ALREADY 2 trillion in debt this year.

Stop pretending Republicans care about fiscal responsibility.

Comparing a government and it's spending mechanisms to a "household budget" is just creating a simplistic metaphor that is SOOOOOOOOO far away from what governments are capable of doing that it's laughable to make the comparison.

But...just for fun...let's see...

Tax cuts for Americans is like having monthly expenses, and your husband says "I volunteered to take a pay cut at work. It's only 30% and it'll help the owner of the company a lot!". And then he comes at you and acts upset that you can't afford to buy groceries and feed the kids.
Oh wait. I guess it does work. But not really...

Because then you come up to your husband and suggest "What if I go get a job?" and he says "NO! That's not permitted. We only have this much money, we could not POSSIBLY get more". All that happens while your children get hungrier and hungrier.

There it is!
I was waiting for something close to justification for not helping poor people.

Glad you didn't disappoint! Right wingers can be predictable for sure.

Are you actually trying to tell me that democrats are not in favor of helping the poor because they want federal workers to go without pay, and are willing to let poor people go hungry if it means having some political leverage? 42 million SNAP recipients would be interested to know. So would 750,000 federal workers. They'll be voting in the mid-terms.

Nope. It only takes 5 democrats to stop playing politics, and allow the government to reopen. They choose politics and "leverage" instead of the poor.
Which Schumer admitted to.
