Hi! I am interested in finding out more about The Salvation Army and there beliefs, I am interested in anything anyone can tell me.

One thing I do know that they have women pastors/minsters and I wondered do they believe in Traditional marriage roles eg man-leader, woman-helper/Housewife?

I'm really not sure what else they offer, so any help is appreciated.

Thank you. :)

The army is basically an outgrowth of the Wesleyan (Methodist)--Holiness movement. It's very evangelical but not at all ceremonial and has the distinction of not observing any sacraments. Overall, it's a doctrinally conservative church, so you may find its views about marriage to be what you are hoping for.

Their theology is basically Arminian. The female leadership came about as a result of the fact that their founder, William Booth, did not have any sons who he could pass leadership to, so he passed it to his daughters.

Whoa, no! I don't think so! Booth favoured women's ministry from the start, influenced no doubt by his great respect for the ministry of his wife, Catherine, (the "Army Mother") who was an effective preacher.

And he had sons as well as daughters, and indeed passed the generalship to one of them, Bramwell Booth. It wasn't until the fourth general that the post was held by a woman: Evangeline Booth, who was elected by the Army Council to succeed Edward Higgins on the back of her impressive leadership of the SA in the United States.

I stand corrected and apologize for not looking into the truth of the matter prior to posting.

Well, yeah, but then you'd have deprived me of the opportunity to display my vast erudition. Think of it that way. ;)
