  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hi guys, I am new around here. I have been on a few different boards and currently do my very best to defend the faith at the all so famous Rapture Ready. I have been a "true" Catholic for about 4-5 years now, and one of the only things that I am still kinda fuzzy about is the rosary.

The other night I was talking to a friend and we were talking about St. Bernedatte (spelling?) and how Mary appeared to her and she started praying her rosary. Well, that is implying that the rosary was already around. I have also read a little about where the 150 Hail Mary's came from in the full rosary... It was back in the day and the Benedictine monks prayed the 150 Pslams over the course of a week (which they still do) and the monks who worked in the fields a lot wanted to participate, but couldn't memorize all the Psalms. Instead, they prayed 150 Our Father's. Eventually it became 150 Hail Marys... My question is, when was the rosary as we know it today actually started... does anyone know?

Thanks for y'alls help!

I always wanted to know more about the history and origins of the Rosary, too.

Who was the Saint that Mary appeared to giving the Brown Scapular? Dominic? Simon? Someone here has to know! After all this education, you'd think I'd know the answers. That's what I love about this forum.

Sorry to sound ignorant but what is a scapular?

A scapular is a piece of cloth that is shoulder width that fits over the head and goes usuall almost reaches the feet in front and behind. It is worn as part of the habit of monastic orders (nuns and/or monks) and is a specific color depending upon the order they belong to. It is usually worn over the habit.

Pious lay persons who are devoted to and/or have a special connection with a specific monastic order began to wear smaller versions of the scapulars to show their dedication and as a symbol of the conversion to holiness in their lives. It is usually worn under the clothes, over the head, with a front and a back.

This is the most common one used by the laity, the Brown Scapular (I wear this one under my clothes all the time):

Again, it is a symbol of devotion and a reminder of my call to holiness.

For more on scapulars, see New Advent: Scapulars.

God Bless!

I was given to understand, once, that it was St. Francis who began the practice of praying the Rosary.
