  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Riddle thread

What I am is plain to see
I have a charge, just not electricity,
I am a measure of what you cannot see
But by that measure everyone can see.
I am what gives such moments blessed
As in the night my light switch pressed
But then the end, my mighty blow,
takes from you that which you cannot sow.
But then I give such memories
Such as the light of a Christmas tree,
What am I is plain to see,
If only you didn't have to pay for me.

Red herring #1: "I am not electricity" (technically this is a true statement).
Since "by that measure everyone can see"; "the night my light switch pressed"; "such as the light of a Christmas tree"; sounds a lot like electricity, particularly because it is something that cannot be seen. But it isn't electricity but rather a measure of it. Then comes the 'end' which takes from you what you cannot sow, its something that has to be paid for. It has everything to do with electricity including the month-end bill. But it isn't electricity itself but how it is measured and the basis for billing (charging). And there is a pun in that the answer is mentioned specifically three times in the riddle, twice specifically telling you what it is, only it happens to be spelled differently. "What I am," and "I am What," so then, "What am I"?

So the answer is watt.
