The Restitution Of All Things

Through the Son God made the whole universe, and to the Son he has ordained that all creation shall ultimately belong.

He has made known to us the secret of His will.

And this is in harmony with God's merciful purpose for the government of the world when the times are ripe for it--

the purpose which He has cherished in His own mind of restoring the whole creation to find its one Head in Christ; yes, things in heaven and things on earth, to find their one Head in Him.

And you too, who in Him were made heirs, having been chosen beforehand in accordance with the intention of Him whose might carries out in everything the design of His own will.

Dr. Arthur Tappan Pierson -The Bible & Spiritual Life-

This view (Restitution of All) is so clearly scriptural that the only surprise is that it has not been more definitely and widely held. It adds immeasurably, both to the glory of Christ as the coming King, and the Father as the former and framer of the ages. It is the period typified by the eighth day of the Mosaic Code: the perfect glory of Christ, reserved for 'the morrow after.' The millennial 'Sabbath.' And while the millenial period is limited to a thousand years, there are no definite limits to this final age of glory.

In order that in adoration of the Name of Jesus every knee will bow themselves and openly acknowledge with joy, in celebration and praise, that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. This profession and confession of His lordship shall be openly and freely proclaimed, acknowledged joyfully by all beings in the heavens, of those on the earth, and those in the underworld.

-Dr. P. B. Fitzwater- (Professor of Systematic Theology- Moody Bible Institute) Christian Theology P. 407

Then there is the Universalist who declares that the redemption provided by Christ avails for the salvation of all men. This means that what God has done for the salvation of sinful men accrues to the benefit of all men. This view of Universalism is quite widespread. Many leaders in the evangelical church hold to this view, even though they have not dared to declare it.

Epilogue

http://hellbusters.8m.com/aswepi.htm

I have thus noticed what Reason is supposed to say against the doctrine of final restitution. But to me this is a question only to be settled by the Word of God; for with our knowledge or lack of knowledge of all the mystery of our being, we are not in a position to argue this point, or to say exactly what is, or what is not, reasonable. What saith the Scripture ? This is the question, and the only question I care to ask here on this subject. At the same time I confess that the restitution of all things, so far from appearing to me unlikely or unreasonable, seems, spite of the mystery of the origin and existence of evil, more consistent with what we know of God than the doctrine of never-ending punishment. To say that sin, assuming it to be opposed to God has the power of creating a world antagonistic to God as everlasting as He is, attributes to it a power equal at least to His; since, according to this view, souls whom God willed to be saved, and for whom Christ died, are held in bondage under the power of sin for ever; and all this in opposition to the Word of God, which says that God's Son "was manifested that He might destroy the works of the devil," (1 John 3:eight) who if the so called orthodox view be right, will succeed in destroying some of the works of the Son of God for ever. -Andrew Jukes-

http://newhopemusic.com/songs.s-z/thine.htm

When I think too of God's justice, which it is said inflicts, not only millions of years of pain for each thought or word or act of sin during this short life of seventy years,--not even millions of ages only for every such act, but a punishment which when millions of ages of judgment have been inflicted for every moment man has lived on earth is no nearer its end than when it first commenced; and all this for twenty, forty, or seventy years of sin in a world which is itself a vale of sorrow;--when I think of this, and then of man, his nature, his weakness, all the circumstances of his brief sojourn and trial in this world; with temptations without, and a foolish heart within; with his judgment weak, his passions strong, his conscience judging, not helping him; with a tempter always near, with this world to hide a better;--when I remember that this creature, though fallen, was once God's child, and that God is not just only, but loving and long-suffering;--I cannot say my reason would conclude, that this creature, failing to avail itself of the mercy here offered by a Saviour, shall therefore find no mercy any more, but be for ever punished with never-ending torments. -Andrew Jukes-

Natural conscience, which with all its failings is a witness for God, protests against any such awful misrepresentation of Him. For even nature teaches that all increase of power lays its possessor under an obligation to act more generously. Shall not then the Judge of all the earth do right? (Gen. 28:25) Shall we say that sinful men are selfish and guilty, if with wealth and power they neglect the poor and miserable; and yet that God, who is eternal love, shall do what even sinful men abhor and reprobate ? For shall we, if one of our children fall and hurt itself, or be lost to us for years, bitterly reproach ourselves for want of care, and be tormented with the thought that with greater watchfulness we might have saved the child,--shall we if at last he is found, even among thieves, a sharer of their crimes, still love him as our own child, make every possible excuse for him, and do all we can to save him,--shall we, though he be condemned, plead for him to the end, urging the strength of those temptations with which he has been so long surrounded,--and shall not God have at least the like pity for His lost ones? Has He left any of His children in peril of being for ever stolen from Him? Can He, if through the seduction of a crafty tempter some wander for awhile, be content that they should remain miserable slaves for ever lost to Him ? He would not be a wise man who risked even an estate, nor a good man who obliged any one else to do so. Can God then ever have exposed His children to the risk of endless separation from Him? All the reason God has given me says, God could not act thus; and that if His children are for ever lost, He even more than they must be miserable. But, as I have said, we have, thank God, a better guide than our reason, even God's blessed Word, with its "more sure" promise; and because that Word declares man's final restitution, and that God will seek His lost ones "till He find them," (Luke 15:4 & eight) and that therefore a day shall come when "there shall be no more curse or death," I gladly accept God's testimony, and look for life and rest, spite of present death and judgment and destruction. -Andrew Jukes-

Excellent question. I took an angle on this a couple of years ago that tied the question of universal salvation in with a possible modern fulfillment of Yom Kippur. Highly speculative, but I think worth consideration. Since that time I have learned to not use the term reincarnation because it really gives the wrong impression. I suspect that ABBA Father YHWH does reuse the same human spirit to record more than one separate identity/personality in two or more separate time periods. In the resurrection though, each of these people will be completely separate. For example if somehow John the Baptist was indeed recorded on the soul/human spirit of Elijah, still, in the resurrection you would have both John the Baptist as well as Elijah. The concept of reincarnation implies that you would only have one big Elijah.

Philippians Chapter 2: 10, 11

It is because of this also that God has so highly exalted Him, and has conferred on Him the Name which is supreme above every/pas other name.

In order that IN the Name of Jesus (so that in adoration of the Name of Jesus) every/pas knee should bow, of beings in the highest heavens, of those on the earth, and of those in the underworld, and that every/pas tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

NOTE: "In" the Name of Jesus, NOT "at" the Name of Jesus.

Robertsons Word Pictures

...not perfunctory genuflections whenever the name of Jesus is mentioned, but universal acknowledgement of the majesty and power of Jesus who carries His human name and nature to heaven. The universal homage to Jesus is seen....-Robertson's Word Pictures-

Thine Oh Lord Is The Glory

http://newhopemusic.com/thine.htm

.....in the name. The name means here the personal name...hence the salutation is not at the name of Jesus, as by bowing when the name is uttered, but....the spiritual sphere, the holy element as it were, in which every prayer is to be offered and every knee to bow....-Bishop Lightfoot-

Confess (exomologhsetai). See on Matt. iii. 6; thank, Matthew xi. 25; Rom. xiv. 11. The verb may also be rendered thank, as Matthew xi. 25; Luke x. 21, that meaning growing out of the sense of open, joyful acknowledgment. The sense here is that of frank, open confession. -Dr. Marvin Vincent- [N.T. Word Studies]

How complete is redemption in the loving attitude of the redeemed.

Wherefore God hath highly exalted Him, and given Him the Name which is above every other name; that in the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things on earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

There are those who explain this passage of Scripture as a sort of compulsory adoration by beings who cannot help themselves; a sort of "Heil Hitler!" from conquered subjects...(subduing not reconciliation). The word kampto means to bend and ALWAYS is used of worship.

"For this cause I bend my knees unto the Father," wrote St. Paul in Eph. 3:14. No compulsary adulation that! And the word confess is also used to mean "praise" or "acclaim." The same Greek word is used to express Jesus' gladness as recorded in Matthew 11:25 and Luke 10:21. He said...

I thank Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth.

Now, according to the apostle Paul, every being in heaven, and in the earth, and in the underworld is to bow the knee in the same worshipful humility that characterized Paul himself, and every tongue is to thank or praise, or acclaim Christ as Lord in the glad spirit that characterized our Lord Himself.. The loving attitude of the whole universe is to be complete and perfect. -Dr. Loyal Hurley

Hi there Tate....Actually rather than a question; the Apostle John by the Spirit of the Lord is declaring by statement that the consummation of our God ends in healing and restoration and deliverance.

And the leaves of the Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations. And there shall no longer be a curse upon anything.

We are glad you have joined us. The Restitution of all things has been declared by the mouths of the prophets from the earliest ages. Hopefully we will begin to post some of their remarkable words, and hear from a few of those who have been standing in the Blaze of the mystery of our God.

Plan A (God's Gourmet Plan Of The Ages)

And to my ears came the voice of everything (every creature) in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the seas, and of all things which are in them, saying, Unto Him who is seated on the high throne, and to the Lamb, may blessing and honour and glory, and the dominion be for ever and ever.

Every created thing (pan ktisma). Every creature in a still wider antiphonal circle beyond the circle of angels (from ktizw, for which see 1 Timothy 4:4; James 1:18), from all the four great fields of life (in heaven, upon the earth, under the earth as in verse 3, with on the sea epi thv talasshv added). No created thing is left out. This universal chorus of praise to Christ from all created life reminds one of the profound mystical passage in Romans 8:20-22 concerning the sympathetic agony of creation (ktisiv) in hope of freedom from the bondage of corruption. If the trail of the serpent is on all creation, it will be ultimately thrown off. -Robertson Word Pictures Of The N.T.-

Blessing and honor
Glory and power
Be unto the Ancient of Days
From every nation
All of creation
Bow before the Ancient of Days

Every tongue in heaven and earth
Shall declare Your glory
Every knee will bow at Your throne
And worship
You will be exalted, oh God
And Your kingdom will not pass away
Oh, Ancient of Days.

Your kingdom shall reign over all the earth
Sing unto the Ancient of days
For none can compare to your matchless worth
Sing unto the Ancient of days.

Blessing and honor
Glory and power
Be unto the Ancient of Days
From every nation
All of creation

Hi there Spiderrr. Much thanks for the link to Kenneth and Dale. Thirty years ago, Dale was killed in an awful automobile wreck. In that experience she was carried into the Presence, and the Love flowing from His Presence. But that is for another day. Yes, friends, every created thing in every dimension of our Father's world crying out in antiphonal chorus. Each calling to one another Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lamb.

:D Even the Baptists join the chorus! :D

Every created thing (pan ktisma; every creature in a still wider antiphonal circle beyond the circle of angels (from ktizw), from all the four great fields of life (in heaven, upon the earth, under the earth as in verse 3, with on the sea epi thv tallasshv added). The antiphonal chorus spreads in ever widening circles beyond the circle of angelic beings to the four living creatures and the 24 presbuteros prostrating themselves before the Ancient of Days.

And the four living creatures cry, Amen! And the twenty-four elders/ presbuteros prostrate themselves and worship Him that lives for ever and ever.

The Father loves the Son, and has given Him control over everything. -John 3:35-

The relevance is obvious; for "all that the Father gives Me, shall come to Me", says Jesus Christ. -John 6:37-

All things are delivered unto Me of My Father...come unto Me all you toiling and burdened ones and I will refresh you. -Matt. 11: 27, 28-

The call of the Lord Jesus "to come to me", is preceeded by all things being handed over to the Son.

All authority/ full authority and power is given unto me...set forth and make disciples of all nations... -Matt. 28:18,19-

All power is given to Christ Jesus by the Father. Linked with all power and authority resting in the Son of God is His claim over all nations.

You have put everything under His feet...You have put Him in complete charge of everything there is...You did not leave a single thing that was not put under His authority and control. -Hebrews 2:8

The connection is significant! The gift of all things to Jesus Christ is linked with...

In order that He by the grace of God in tasting death for every man should stand for us all. -Hebrews 2:9-

Jesus Christ eats death for every man! As He creates all things in actuality, so He redeems and restores all things in actuality, not potentially! The Father has given to Him all things, and all things given to Him shall come to Him.

We have heard Him ourselves and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world. -John 4:42 -

Jesus Christ is not a potential Saviour; this is indeed the Saviour of the world. Christ will in fact deliver and save the whole world!

For the bread of God is He which comes down from heaven and gives life unto the world. -John 6:33-

The world, or kosmos, in the Scriptures is the ungodly mass. It is contrasted with the inner circle of the faithful elect, the especially of His love. This world is over and over again claimed by Christ Jesus. He gives Life for it, and His gifts are without repentance.

Through the Son God made the whole universe, and to the Son He has ordained all creation shall ultimately belong.

All that the Father is giving Me shall come to Me; and this is the Father's will, that of all which He has given Me I should lose nothing. -John 6:37-39

God the Father has given to Christ Jesus all things, not some things...all things! Here we have the promise that of all that has been given to Him shall come to Him, and that nothing shall be lost! Jesus Christ gathers up the fragments that remain, that nothing may be lost.

Gather up the broken pieces that remain, that nothing be lost.
-John 6:12-

Broken men and women are more important to our Lord than broken bread and fish!

I am the living bread: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live forever; the bread which I give for the life of the world. -John 6:51

It is the ungodly mass, the kosmos, for whose life Christ has given Himself! Can He give in vain? His gifts are "without repentance", i.e., must in the final analysis be finally effective.

I am the Light of the world: no follower of Mine shall wander in the dark, for living light will flood your path. -John 8:12-

Christ Jesus is Light as well as the Life of the world!

And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw/drag/impel all mankind unto Me. -John 12:32 -

A partial drawing/dragging/impeling makes our Lord's words untrue! Our Father's constraining grace will actually draw, drag, impel all men unto Himself. He does not say, or imply, I will try to draw, drag, impel all mankind unto Me and fail!

So shall I lift up in My pierced hand...beyond the reach of grief and guilt...the whole creation. -Eliz. B. Browning-

If any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. -John 12:47-

The distinct purpose of Jesus Christ is to save the world. It can only be evaded by asserting that He will fail in the very thing which He came to do! His triumph is complete!

Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands/ had entrusted everything to Him...

Our Lord's reconciliation between dust and Divinity is to be fully realized! "Knowing that His hour was come", our Lord with the sure knowledge that all things were given to Him, moves toward the expiation for our sins....and not for our sins only, but for the sins of the whole ungodly mass, the hilasmos of the holos. Absolute victory is in the hands of the Archegos and Podromos! I hold in My hands the keys of death and hades! And those Hands....Those Hands are the hands of the Master Locksmith!

For thou hast made him sovereign over all mankind/ all flesh, that whatsover thou hast given him, to them he should give eternal life. -John 17:2-

Literally the original runs...

Thou gavest to Him authority over all flesh; in order that (as to) all which Thou hast given to Him (i.e. to all), He should give eternal life.

The Greek is clear; but our versions fail in not repeating the emphatic ALL (repeated in the original), which involves the gift (not the offer) of eternal life to all by Christ--thus obscuring the meaning.

Dr. Marvin Vincent -N.T. Word Studies-

"All flesh"=

A Hebrew phrase denoting the whole of humanity in its imperfection.

The relevance is obvious; for "all that the Father gives Me, shall come to Me", says Jesus Christ. -John 6:37-

The call of the Lord Jesus "to come to me", is preceeded by all things being handed over to the Son.

All power is given to Christ Jesus by the Father. Linked with all power and authority resting in the Son of God is His claim over all nations.

The connection is significant! The gift of all things to Jesus Christ is linked with...

Jesus Christ eats death for every man! As He creates all things in actuality, so He redeems and restores all things in actuality, not potentially! The Father has given to Him all things, and all things given to Him shall come to Him.

Jesus Christ is not a potential Saviour; this is indeed the Saviour of the world. Christ will in fact deliver and save the whole world!

The world, or kosmos, in the Scriptures is the ungodly mass. It is contrasted with the inner circle of the faithful elect, the especially of His love. This world is over and over again claimed by Christ Jesus. He gives Life for it, and His gifts are without repentance.

God the Father has given to Christ Jesus all things, not some things...all things! Here we have the promise that of all that has been given to Him shall come to Him, and that nothing shall be lost! Jesus Christ gathers up the fragments that remain, that nothing may be lost.

Broken men and women are more important to our Lord than broken bread and fish!

It is the ungodly mass, the kosmos, for whose life Christ has given Himself! Can He give in vain? His gifts are "without repentance", i.e., must in the final analysis be finally effective.

Christ Jesus is Light as well as the Life of the world!

A partial drawing/dragging/impeling makes our Lord's words untrue! Our Father's constraining grace will actually draw, drag, impel all men unto Himself. He does not say, or imply, I will try to draw, drag, impel all mankind unto Me and fail!

The distinct purpose of Jesus Christ is to save the world. It can only be evaded by asserting that He will fail in the very thing which He came to do! His triumph is complete!

Literally the original runs...

If the restitution of all things is true, and the ultimate purpose of God is to remove the curse upon everything; there are many who will be greatly distressed! Thankyou F.L. for this link. And there shall no longer be a curse upon anything. Is it possible?

Hi there Rockhead. Our God does not work within the confines of possibility! With God all things are possible, and all aspects of His glorious plan in the Son of His love, is based solely within Himself and His sovereign will. Our Father's purpose is indeed to remove the curse upon everything! "And there shall no longer be a curse upon anything", declares St. John on the Patmos Isle under the anointing Presence.

1 Corinthians 15:21-28

21. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

23. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

24. Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

25. For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

Psl. 110:1- Matt 22:44- Luke 20:43- Acts 2:34- Heb 1:13

26. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

27. For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

28. And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

Assuredly the Bible is not the story of sin, deepening into eternal ruin, of God's Son, worsted in His utmost effort; it is from the opening to the close the story of grace stronger than sin--of life victorious over every form of death--of God triumphing over evil.

Dr. William Barclay

I am a convinced universalist. I believe that in the end all men will be gathered into the love of God. In the early days Origen was the great name connected with universalism. I would believe with Origen that universalism is no easy thing. Origen believed that after death there were many who would need prolonged instruction, the sternest discipline, even the severest punishment before they were fit for the presence of God. Origen did not eliminate hell; he believed that some people would have to go to heaven via hell. He believed that even at the end of the day there would be some on whom the scars remained. He did not believe in eternal punishment, but he did see the possibility of eternal penalty. And so the choice is whether we accept God's offer and invitation willingly, or take the long and terrible way round through ages of purification.

Gregory of Nyssa offered three reasons why he believed in universalism. First, he believed in it because of the character of God. "Being good, God entertains pity for fallen man; being wise, he is not ignorant of the means for his recovery." Second, he believed in it because of the nature of evil. Evil must in the end be moved out of existence, "so that the absolutely non-existent should cease to be at all." Evil is essentially negative and doomed to non-existence. Third, he believed in it because of the purpose of punishment. The purpose of punishment is always remedial. Its aim is "to get the good separated from the evil and to attract it into the communion of blessedness." Punishment will hurt, but it is like the fire which separates the alloy from the gold; it is like the surgery which removes the diseased thing; it is like the cautery which burns out that which cannot be removed any other way. But I want to set down not the arguments of others but the thoughts which have persuaded me personally of universal salvation.
