  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Plot Summary: In "The Reaping," Hilary Swank plays a former Christian missionary who lost her faith after her family was tragically killed, and has since become a world renowned expert in disproving religious phenomena. But when she investigates a small Louisiana town that is suffering from what appear to be the Biblical plagues, she realizes that science cannot explain what is happening and she must regain her faith to combat the dark forces threatening the community.

I went and saw this film the day after it opened with my best friend. I'd heard some negative reviews about it beforehand, but we'd been planning on seeing it for a while.
I think the R rating was light. This could easily have been a PG-13. If the filmmakers wanted to make it R, they could have pushed the boundaries just a little bit more to make the rating seem realistic.
I thought the acting was good. There were no over-the-top performances, or lacking performances. Hilary Swank, obviously, did a great job.
The special effects were great, especially the locust scene. It was breathtaking. Also, the storyline kept me interested, and everytime one of the plagues ended I thought "Oh no, there's 5 more to go!" I liked seeing the plagues in action and anticipated all of them.
This movie is biblical and never contradicts the Bible (except in one small case when Hilary Swank's colleague says the pharaoh's magicians matched each plague with their own magic, when in reality they only matched the first three). I also love the message that you need faith to overcome evil and *spoiler alert* that Hilary Swank returned to Christianity in the end, not out of fear, but out of true love for Jesus Christ.
This was definitely more of a suspense/thriller, not a horror. Also *spoiler alert* when the ending started to come closer and closer, and the explanations about the town started to come out, it was all rather confusing and, truthfully, a little gimicky. I'm sure if they hadn't made the big secret so confusing, the payoff of the truth about the town and the little girl would have been better. I was perfectly fine with the town actually being a rather Satanic cult, but the multi-layered facets of the cult were confusing and unneeded. And the climax seemed too special-effects crazy when compared to the rest of the movie. I was disappointed with the overhaul of special effects in the final action sequence but, again, it's forgiveable.
Overall, I give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. I'll probably own it when it comes out on DVD because I was entertained by it, and I love religious-themed thrillers/horrors, such as this, The Omen, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, etc.
While not the best addition into the genre, it certainly is not the worst and is worth a rent when it comes out. I wouldn't pay 8 dollars to go see it in theatres, though.
