Here's the trailer. http://youtube.com/watch?v=6kTjWXjVLy0

I saw a trailer for this movie today, and I was wondering what Christians thought about it. From what I can tell, the movie is about a small town where the plagues from Egypt and the Exodus are happening again. The reason I ask is because it seemed to portray the Christian God in an extremely negative fashion, and his followers as rather crazy. Do you think there is going to be some huge outcry like there was when Walmart changed "Merry Christmas" to "Happy Holidays" or is this just going to sort of blow over? What are your personal thoughts about the film as well.

The Anti-Christs are producing this stuff by the ton these days. Personally i have become immune to it. Once you see the same cardboard characterisation of followers of God shoved in your face 100 times you kind of just roll your eyes with an air of annoyed boredom.

What? A Hollywood movie showing Christianity in a negative light? I'm shocked!

In related news, night is dark and water is wet.

I don't go to the picture shows much. I think the last one I saw was "We Were Soldiers" and that was only because it was about one of my college professors.

Before that, probably "Braveheart". It's a shame, really. It isn't just that pictures are so offensive, but they're not even good pictures.

I'll tell you what I did see. We rented "Facing the Giants" the other night. It isn't "Citizen Kane", but it's a good movie with a great message. The scene on the football field where the coach is trying to demonstrate what they can do if they'll just put their minds to it was wonderful and a great message, too.

I watched "Mystery, Alaska" the other night, too.

If it just weren't for that one scene in the pickup truck, it would have been a great family movie.

When hubby and I saw the previews, I was interested in seeing it . . . until I saw it was rated "R". I don't watch rated "R" movies much, and certainly not thrillers. I really don't think there will be much Christian outcry on this, because I don't think many Christians will see the movie.
That said, movies that have modern-day plagues (now either explained away or regarded as nonsensical) intrigue me, and I like to see different interpretations (by Christians) on how the End Times will culminate. This is not one I'll see.

People are a lot more gullible than they think. After any significant movie release, you will find posts here about people questioning a specific area of their faith that relates to the movie.

And there are also kids' movies that influence generations much more strongly than anyone will admit.

One time I was thinking about how my parents raised me with certain beliefs, and I suddenly realized that some of my strong opinions came from TV shows, not where I thought they came from. Many others came from the music they kept in the house. Sad but true.

I had to come comment on this one...because i work at a movie theatre and i will not see this movie...mainly because of the rating R and also because it does not lift up my lord and Savior. I think that it upsets me to think that the world is so displaced that they can not be pulled back in time to be saved from these things that will take place( which this movie doesnt match the bible)....Im sad! I wish that we could all be saved...but God know that we wont....but he also knows that everyone will confess that he is king. This movie is just a toy from the devil to get the world thinking that the tribulation period is a myth and will not occur but mark it down if God said it...HE MEANS IT!!! God is only giving what is deserved, i dont think that everyone deserves to me tormented like that but if you didnt choose to serve God, be his child and do his will. You will see his wrath and if your wondering why is because...ex: if you call your husband or wife everyday on the phone and try over over to talk to them and get them to be one with you and they deny your love and you commitment then you will get fed up...God gave us a way out if it was not taken then you have no reason to be upset with him!!! And plus if you stay in the world you will only have this world to look forward to! the movie is incorrect and plus the women in the movie is said to lose her faith!!! thats already a lost of tie with christian faith because if you had your salvation once you can not lose it!!!well thats it

In the X Files, Scully lost her faith, and turned to science to explain it. However, on several episodes, she would see what couldn't be explained by science - someone who seemed to intervene mysteriously, and then vanish, a story about 4 girls that died, that turned out to be offspring of a woman and an angel, another where the devil is conjured and frogs rain from the sky...she ultimately returns to her belief because she can no longer deny it.

Do you see these kind of things as anti-christian, or pro-christian, or neutral?

1. They show people the possibilities of the spiritual realm, making it easier to take Christian teachings seriously.

2. They invoke unnecessary fear, often without showing empowerment. (Bad thing drifts away, or falls off a cliff, but the ideal and predictable solution is never found.... ) Think of the helplessness throughout Jumanji.

3. They entice people to try tactics of the various characters... not necessarily siding with the protagonist or the most thoughtful one. (Take vampirism and self-professed werewolves, for instance... Columbine shooters...Gone in 60 Seconds values).

4. They distort reality (in writing a script unique enough to put out there) so that viewers are given a strong multi-sense impression of a topic, that competes with the single-sense experience of reading a similar topic in scriptures.

I so love your responses. They are concise, clear and well articulated. It's the teacher in my i suppose.

So, as a followup:
Given that you have listed this as a criteria, how, then, did you feel about The Passion? Some christians said that it made them think about how much Christ sacrificed, while others' thought that it focused on the violence too much (surprise surprise given the director), others' said it was anti semetic, etc.

Pro/Anti/or Neutral?

(What i'm trying to understand is a clear understanding of what makes one movie prochristian, and another anti, because it seems vague or nonobejective).

Another example: The Book of Daniel had an episcopal priest that had a problem with pain pills, and actually saw Jesus and talked to him. Jesus was more like a therapist - no shaming, but stating the obvious - the pills again?? - that weighed on the priest's heart. There was a gay son, etc.

I will be the first to admit that the show was hyper-liberal, so I wasn't surprised at the outrage. Yet, how I saw it was that a) it shows priests in a human light with human problems, b) I've never had Jesus appear and cuss me out for doing something wrong - it's usually a slow feeling of guilt knowing better, and c) at least it has people talking about God at all, as opposed to Desperate Housewives, or The Next Pussycat Doll.

Is this really anti christian?

Most of us who went to The Last Temptation of Christ kept waiting for the part of the movie people actually showed up to protest, and most of us left, thinking, "you protested THAT?" really?

Response?

5% from rottentomatoes!

Thanks for the reminder -- I had forgotten about that site. I like how they list movies slated for years from now.

Heh heh, I will copy and paste this in order to see it again, because I am so desperate for affirmation. (-: Oh-- same for you.

:BigBlush: I wanted to see that for the longest time. Then, when I finally had a convenient opportunity, I turned it down. I didn't think I could bear to watch the crucifixion drag on for that amount of time.

I encouraged people to go, watched trailers and watched behind-the-scenes shows, (and watched Foamy's Passion of the Jesus) but I didn't want to get into such an emotionally pulling position. It felt as though it would bowl over my whole week.

So, you can call me wimp and hypocrite and whatever. My neglect of the movie probably related to your question, but I never put it into words.
