Admittedly, Starcraft has a better story, but which proper RTS gamer cares about a story anyway? We just want to see stuff getting blown up, and that big "VICTORY!" word on our screen. :)

If quality of units discerns how good a game is, Total Annihilation would come out on top. In Starcraft, you have jerky sprites. In TA, you get 3D units, constructed of polygons, and moving smoothly across the screen - Kbots walk, planes fly, bank and barrel roll, vehicles move smoothly and ships, well, float. :) Planes in SC hover rather than fly. Buildings in TA leave debris, where as they just vanish in Starcraft. And as for the firing of the units, TA's weapons are affected by the wind, elevation and gravity of the landscape, whereas Starcraft's are not.
And what about projectiles? Non existent in Starcraft, with marines shooting things behind mountain walls, under tanks, behind barracks, etc. with no problem at all. In TA this can never happen, as everything uses projectiles to determine the flight path, whether or not something would hit, and then the damage from how close the explosion was. And units in SC can't fire while moving, whereas they automatically do this in TA. This can be turned off if necessary.

Perhaps you mis understood what I meant when I said "quality of units." You see, last time I played TA (which was, I confess, quite some time ago) even though you had tons of units, each side basicaly had the same units. They all did the same things. One side had a tank that did something cool, the other side had a tank that did something equally cool. :sleep:

Not so in Starcraft. Each unit for each side was different, totally and utterly. From the most basic units to the highly advanced ones. Not two units had anything in comon. Each side had totally different structures with different capabilities. :bow:

Also, unlike TA (which I bet I couldn't go find in a store right now if I wanted to) Starcraft has withstood the test of time. :)

There are many expansion packs, 3rd party units, mods, etc. all still underway and in progress, even right here in 2003, and there is still a very large community for TA, just look at Planetannihilation. Starcraft doesn't allow you to create 3rd party units :) Also, TA is still widely available. If someone wanted a copy of it they could easily get it from many a source. :)

I agree with your point that OTA* has essentially the same units for both sides, but when you start varying units you run into a balancing problem. Many of the custom 3rd-party expansion packs have entirely different units and are well balanced (e.g. TAUCP), and even in OTA you get lighting guns and paralysers for ARM and flamethrowers for CORE, a distinct difference. But many of Starcrafts units are addons for their buildings anyway, and the large ships such as Battlecruisers that are available are scaled wrongly. TA avoids this by not including massive destroyer ships and scaling them down :)

* = original TA
