Holy freakin' crap, why haven't I heard of this book before? I was preping a speech for prayer group and was looking at cs lewis quotes, and the quotes from "The Problem of Pain" coincided with so many points in my speech, I can't believe no one has ever talked about this book with me before. Well anyway, heres some quotes ill be using in my speech, and perhaps when i get the final copy done I'll post it on OBOB if you guys want.

"God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: [pain] is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."

"[Pain] removes the veil; it plants the flag of truth within the fortress of a rebel soul."

"Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness."

"Try to exclude the possibility of suffering which the order of nature and the existence of free-wills involve, and you find that you have excluded life itself."

"Safe?' said Mr. Beaver...'Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good.” (from his chronicles, but still relavent)

"This act of self-will on the part of the creature, which constitutes an utter falseness to its true creaturely position, is the only sin that can be conceived as the Fall."

"From the moment a creature becomes aware of God as God and of itself as self, the terrible alternative of choosing God or self for the centre is opened to it."

"The dangers of apparent self-sufficiency explain why Our Lord regards the vices of the feckless and dissipated so much more leniently than the vices that lead to worldly success."

"Prostitutes are in no danger of finding their present life so satisfactory that they cannot turn to God: the proud, the avaricious, the self-righteous, are in that danger."

You will find gems in ALL of C.S. Lewis' books--to name a few, Mere Christianity, The Great Divorce, The Problem with Pain, The Screwtape Letters, etc. I even love his Narnia series--all TEN books! I used to keep some of the gems I culled out of his book on the door of my refrigerator. Started to look like "Philosophy 101" :D

Yes, it is a great book. I read it in my Intro to Philosophy class, and have picked it up a few times. I gave it to one of my atheist friends about 5 months ago, and he's been asking me some questions since then. Please pray for him.

In addition, I hope that one of the fruits of the Chronicles of Narnia books, is that more and more people start picking up other CS Lewis's books as well.
