But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession 1 Peter 2:9 (BSB)
A royal priesthood... we, who believe in Christ, have been made priest unto our Father.
Now in the OT, under Mosaic Law, the priest had to be cleansed before they were allowed to fulfill their duty. They were cleansed by two elements:
1) Water
2) Blood
Now this is what you are to do to consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve Me as priests: Take a young bull and two rams without blemish, along with unleavened bread, unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil. Make them out of fine wheat flour, put them in a basket, and present them in the basket, along with the bull and the two rams. Then present Aaron and his sons at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and wash them with water. Exodus 29:1-4 (BSB)
Take the second ram, and Aaron and his sons are to lay their hands on its head. Slaughter the ram, take some of its blood, and put it on the right earlobes of Aaron and his sons, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. Sprinkle the remaining blood on all sides of the altar. And take some of the blood on the altar and some of the anointing oil and sprinkle it on Aaron and his garments, as well as on his sons and their garments. Then he and his garments will be consecrated, as well as his sons and their garments. Exodus 29:19-21 (BSB)
Both were necessary.
Now, we believe the OT was shadow of things to come. That all things in the Old, pointed towards the New and has meaning and application for us in our current walk with the Father.
Now these are one time things, no need to constantly apply the blood or the water, they are done once and for all. Scriptures speak of Jesus only needing to offer His blood once.
Christ was offered once Hebrews 9:28 (BSB)
by a single offering He has made perfect for all time those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 10:14 (BSB)
We only need the blood once, and it covers us perpetually through faith.
We only need cleansed with water once, and it covers us perpetually through faith.
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Hebrews 10:19-22 (BSB)
This is why the Lord told John the Baptist when he was being baptized...
It is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness in this way. Matthew 3:15 (BSB)
Jesus was referring back to this requirement of the Law, that the high priests and those priests under him were to be cleansed via water and blood.
