:prayer:Heavenly Father, look upon your faithful servant with love. Grant your servant the greatness of your everlasting mercy. Accept him into your most gracious love.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our lord,
Amen.

If you've got some free time, patrol some of the theology forums for posts or threads taking advantage of this to try to bait the Catholics; this is not the time.

How cruel to mock someone when he/she is in mourning! Those people ought to be very, very ashamed!

I have to go to bed now, so I will have to take a break from reporting uncharitable or even hateful posts tacked onto this thread.

Let me make this perfectly clear: I might well not be Christian today, but for the love, affection, and support of some Catholics I have known on this forum. Whether or not I share all of their opinions about theology is not at issue; we will seek the answers to these questions honestly, and together, and we will learn from each other as best we can.

Of the denominational forums, in a way, we are one of the ones who should be furthest from the ancient debate between the Protestants and the Catholics, being neither, and having been at various times in conflict with both.

But today... Today, people who are my brothers and sisters in Christ have lost a man who was important to them.

Today, humans, creations of God, have lost a person who meant much to them.

I would not dance at a man's funeral. I will not mock mourners. I will stand with them, I will sit by them in companionable silence, I will cry with them. I will, in short, love them as I was directed to by my Lord.

We can debate another day. We can argue some other time. Today, humans suffer, and we are called to bring comfort to the afflicted. No exceptions. No excuses.

Here I stand. I can do no other.

I'm sorry he's gone.

I was in Catholic school when he came to Philadelphia and I remember that all of the nuns were really excited. There was talk that the schoolchildren would get to see him at the Civic Center, but we never did.

He was a good man and, while I may not agree with Roman Catholic theology, I had a tremendous amount of respect for the man, personally.

I admired his gregarious, outgoing personality, his devotion to pro-life causes, and his strong stand against Communism, without which, President Reagan's fight would have been much more difficult.

Thank you all so much for your words of comfort, I can't even begin to explain how much this means to all of us who are feeling rather like orphans right now. We will get a new "Papa", but we still mourn for ourselves, because we have to wait to be with our very loved Pope John Paul II. Your prayers and support are so much appreciated though!! God bless you all brothers and sisters!!

Friend, your post is ill-timed, but I will answer.

The Catholics believe in salvation through faith, just as all other Christians do. The difference is that they believe that true faith must be expressed in works, which is firmly Scriptural.

The Pope is presumably in Heaven, because he affirmed and believed the same things we do, and trusted in Jesus and Jesus alone to save him.

The relevance of works is that we may judge him by his fruit. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God." Not one person in ten million shows the heart for making peace that John Paul II did. He forgave the man who tried to kill him. Who of us has done as much?

The belief that Catholics "base salvation on works" is quite simply a lie, spread by people like Jack Chick (who also claims that the Catholics created Communism and Islam!). It is not the truth of their beliefs. I have had long conversations with Catholics about the relationship between faith and works, and I do not believe them to be in error. Their doctrine is more complicated, but then, many people who preach "salvation by faith" commit various errors in oversimplifying Biblical teachings on this.

The book of James may be of use in understanding this.

Once again: The Pope did not expect Heaven as a reward for his good actions. I believe he will go to Heaven as the natural consequence of the faith which his good actions demonstrated to us all.

I have answered these questions in PM. I do not believe they should be being asked in public at this time, out of respect for people who are mourning a lost loved one.

Your kindness and Christian charity have been simply overwhelming, Seebs. Simply. Overwhelming. God bless you, brother.

To All: If others have questions about Catholicism or what Catholics believe, I invite you to PM me personally. Many are mourning, and questions can come off a bit brusk, but I'd be happy to answer any questions via PM.

Thank you Carrie.

I will do the same, if anyone has questions about the Catholic church or Catholic theology, feel free to PM me.

Thank you all for your support, it has been wonderful to see the overwhelming response from our brothers and sisters in Christ!:groupray:
