Purely for the sake of argument, let's say God had more time with Moses, or more space on the tablets, and decided to issue more commandments than the 10 we all know, what do you think he would have chosen? Another way of putting this is, what do you think is missing, if anything, from the 10 commandments?

I'll start the ball rolling with a couple of obvious ones:

11) Thou shall not rape
12) Never take another human being as a slave

To be honest, there's an argument that one or both of these could have made it into the top ten. I mean, we all dislike graven images, but they're not as bad as rape.

Anyway, let's hear what people think about which commandments failed to make the cut...

It's hard to put those on the commandments when Yahweh ordered and forced people to do these things.

Well OK, that's the reason they weren't included, but I think most of us would agree that they should have been, so they still qualify for a wish list.

Here's another: Do not visit unnecessary suffering upon any animal.

Or a slightly controversial one: It is a woman's choice to decide whether or not to see a pregnancy through to childbirth

Better Ten Commandments:

1) Do not deceive without just cause.
2) Do not murder.
3) In all things desire justice.
4) Do not bring unnecessary suffering to conscious creatures.
5) Care for those in need.
6) Search for the truth.
7) Do not desire to kill, injure, or maim living, breathing creatures.
8) Do not own, possess, or control another human.
9) Do not lust after the possessions of others.
10) Maintain responsible relationships. Do not reproduce unless you are willing to care greatly for your offspring.

It's a good thing God created His own commandments instead of having us do it. This is an example of how we can really screw things up.

1. Deception is ok if you can justify it.
3. We now get to decide for ourselves what justice is.
4. Animal rights activists would love making animals equal to humans.
6. As long as you don't actually arrive at what truth is, lest you be labeled.
7. Now we all have to be vegetarians.
8. Relationships would go out the window, by definition.

How dare those people lie to Nazis about hiding Jews!

3. We now get to decide for ourselves what justice is.

Obviously it doesn't say or imply that.

4. Animal rights activists would love making animals equal to humans.

Nor does it say that. And how dare we want to not cause pain to conscious creatures.

6. As long as you don't actually arrive at what truth is, lest you be labeled.

Doesn't say that.

7. Now we all have to be vegetarians.

Doesn't say that.

8. Relationships would go out the window, by definition.

Have no idea what you're talking about.

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Or possibly improve things. Modern medicine and technology is nice to have.
1. Deception is ok if you can justify it.
It is under the right circumstances. The example of hiding Jews from the Nazis is a totally justified lie, IMO.
3. We now get to decide for ourselves what justice is.
Just like we always have. Where do you think laws come from?
4. Animal rights activists would love making animals equal to humans.
I'm no animal rights activist but honestly, what's wrong with treating animals with the same respect and dignity we should be giving each other?
6. As long as you don't actually arrive at what truth is, lest you be labeled
No idea what this means. It's an incomplete sentence.
7. Now we all have to be vegetarians.
Isn't that how things were supposed to be from the beginning, before the fall?
8. Relationships would go out the window, by definition.
I don't see how or why they would. Perhaps you can enlighten me?

How about something dealing with the care and nurture of children? All we ever seem to hear in those horrible stories is how children can be sacrificed, slaughtered, raped, beaten or sold into slavery.

But never that they should be loved and cherished...

You know there are about six hundred additional "regulations" after the traditional ten. Maybe God got tired of babysitting his followers and simply said,

"Go figure out the rest of it".

You'd hope all that and more would be covered in Gal 5:14

14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

how about...

"Thou shalt ignore mine commandments whenever necessary, or convenient, or just whenever thou feel like it...then thou must immediately justify breaking of said commandments in thine mind as something you can do, but not others...then whenst thou are put to questions regarding your morality, thou shalt act as if thou are pure as the driven snow whichith was born yesterday and it is in fact all others which are evil."

.....or is that too long?

Except it really doesn't cover "you shall take slaves from the FOREIGNERS among you" does it...?

Foreigners who were enemies of God and Israel and captured in battle were not neighbors.

That's a couple of mentions of the Golden Rule, which I agree is a very good foundation for any value system. Which is why it formed the basis for ethics in ancient civilizations across the world.

The problem for Bible scholars, is that they can point to quite a few OT orders from God which are in direct contravention of the Golden Rule.

how about...

That's the unspoken commandment :D

I like George Carlin's version.
I quite like "Thou shalt keep thine religion to thyself"

There are actually 613 commandments. The "10" are just the most famous, lol.

None of the other 613 state that you shouldn't keep slaves though. In fact, the OT gives rules on how to enslave people.

Having said that.... 4 of these "10 commandments" all deal with the jealous and petty properties of the deity that supposedly gave them. They are pretty pointless.
