although I'm not a fan of LOTR (no tomatoes please!!), I still think that it's their turn to win. those movies are very well-made and classic. in 20 years, I doubt that most people will be watching "Mystic River", but they'll still be watching the LOTR trilogy. my favourite for best actor is Johnny Depp of course! he's a brilliant actor, and it's about time he got some recognition for his work.

Lost in Translation

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Bill Murray for Lost in Translation
Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
I would be happy with either

I can live with ROTK as best picture, if I consider they are really giving the award to the series as opposed to the last episode.
At least Sofia won for Best Screenplay

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
I would have preferred anyone to Sean Penn

WOOT for Charlize

11 oscars for ROTK. Now... I'm both a Tolkien fan and a fan of the LOTR movies, but I was not as happy with ROTK. I don't think they deserved best adapted screenplay and certainly not 'best editing'. Still... I'm just going to considder the oscars for a trilogy as a whole, and then they're quite deserved.

I was hoping for Johny Depp or Bill Murray to get recognition for best actor, but I'm quite happy with Sean Penn as well. He's a great actor and has been overlooked a few times already. Still.. Depp and Murray aren't actors that get easily nominated... Perhaps next time though.
I was VERY glad to see Renée Zellweger receive hers! *G*
All in all it was quite a tame oscar ceremony in comparison to next year. Some funny moments though. Like 'the song to end your oscar speech'.

I'll just repost what I posted in the News Forum thread on the Oscars:

Congrats to LOTR:ROTK. It deserved every award it got. That trilogy of movies will be remembered long after most of the other are lost in time. A story of good vs. evil, virtue, self sacrifice, friendship, love, heroism and selflessness - all done in the 'spirit' of the text and with love and care and great special effects, wonderful music.

It overtook Star Wars as my favorite film series and I've never looked back to Lucas for my epic fantasy fix.

I liked the trilogy. For the trilogy as a whole most oscars ROTK got were deserved, but no way ROTK deserved best editing. *L* I would have liked to see Sean Austin to be nominated for best actor in a supporting role myself. He managed to balance a tightrope: drama without melodrama.

I was kinda dissapointed. The Oscar's had no surprise winners AT ALL :( LOTR was so-so, and not super fantastic enough to win everything.(I am NOT starting a debate--just stating my opinion..okay..don't start going nuts on me saying [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] it was the best ever, you are stupid) I was rootin' for "Kiss at the end of the rainbow"--A Mighty Wind to win best song.

Heck 'A Mighty Wind' should have won best picture in my opinion...but hey I guess I have to be in the academy for my opinions to count ;)
All in all a dissapointing night...Billy Crystal was funny at least...and Blake Edwards part was good...and a few other funny moments...but the actual giving of the awards was boring.

Yea for ROTK!! Finally! Personally, the first movie of the trilogy was my favorite (the last one was WAYYYYY too draining), but I'm glad PJ and everybody else in the cast and crew finally got the recognition they so very much deserved.

And I was terribly bummed that Johnny Depp didn't win. But, hey, gotta have tears and angst over funny, right?

Anyway, at least he got the SAG award...

ROTK for best editing?? what the fudge?? the editor for that movie should have to eat raw meat with fish tails. I just dont see how that had the best editing. i was surpised to see that "city of God" didnt win anything.

I sat up late to see Johnny Depp win. It appears Sean Penn worked his butt off on an apparently good part in an apparently good movie just so he could get up in front of his peers and say something smug and political. Big deal. I won't bother to watch his movie.
