because people on her staff did something wrong.

The controversy around Ellen happen way after she hosted the Oscars. And While this might be hard to believe, since Ellen executive produces her show, she is responsible for the behavior of her employees. And of course people are going to be upset if somebody who's whole shtick is based around being kind and nice (I don't get it personally. A lot of the stuff she does seems down right mean imo) runs a workplace that is anything but.

You're missing the crux of the issue though. Kevin Hart was given an opportunity to apologize for the jokes and keep the gig. He refused, which implies that he still thought jokes about beating somebody for being gay was funny.
