  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So i would think it is part your commands from god. I don't know maybe i am getting this all wrong but for some reason i can't see god having a chage of mind or giving one set of people to follow these rules and another to a diffrent set of people.

Maybe god didn't write the bible.

I want to know is the old testament the word of god and if so then why are people ignoring the parts that don't suit there lifestyle, such as eating pork?

Christians believe there are different kinds of laws in the bible. One set of laws, the ceremonial ones like sacrifices, were not continued because of a few points of christian doctrine.

Christians believe that the ceremonial laws were created in order to foreshadow the birth of Jesus and his future works. Stuff like that, although christians may/may not follow these days still holds metaphorical value. The sacrificing of first born lambs without blemish, for instance, is not done by christians. However, christians do believe that Jesus was sacrificed for the sins of the world.

If the purpose of ceremonial laws was, in part, to foreshadow Jesus then naturally they no longer need to be followed once he was born and had done his work.

This is not to say that no christian ever ignore the parts that don't suit their lifestyle. I'm of the opinion that everyone ignores something or another but what and how you ignore makes all the difference. Some people ignore all the parts of killing, enslaving, and raping... they choose not to partake of those things and believe that the bible is fluffy and innocent. Some people ignore all the parts of compassion, loving enemies, giving to the poor... they choose not to partake in those things for their own gratification. Nobody's perfect.

And if it is not then what? did god change his mind? Or was put in the bible by accident?

Not exactly. On the face of it, you would think God made the laws because he wanted people to follow them. That would only be 1/2 correct.

In the bible, you can read about God supposedly being quite upset the Isrealites because they did what was correct by the law, but their hearts were completely unharmonious with the intentions behind the law. Sacrifices given without gratitude, like Cain. Religiousity for the sake of appearances.

Just for the record i wasn't being specific to deitary laws

"Jewish laws could have saved people, then there would have been no need for Jesus to save everyone, and thus there is no longer a need to follow old laws."

I am not sure i get this. So your saying people wern't following gods laws so he came back and said hey, forget about all those laws intead try these new ones(not in that context of course)

And if god knows what is going to happen before it happens then why would he hare created those laws in the first place. It just doesn't seem like something an all powerful and knowning god would do.

Also, the old testament is no longer relevent then why is it in the bible ?

The law was given to us to show us that we are not good enough for slavation. The entire OT forshadows the need for Christ. The law is given and the the heros of the faith Adam, Eve, Abraham, Sarah, David, and all the others are shown to sin against God. If these great people could not live without sin then no one can. The OT also shows us how much God loves us. In the OT God continually gives second and third and fourth chances to His people. And He finally shows us His ultimate love by giving us His son in the NT.
When Jesus came he clearly stated that the old laws are to be obeyed:
Matthew 5:
17: Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
18: For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19: Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20: For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

However Jesus got rid of many the laws, such as the food laws and sacrfice law etc. Jesus also changed or modified many laws. Therefore we are to follow all of the OT laws unless they are done away with, changed or modified in the NT. We follow God's law becuase we love Him, God's saves us by His grace alone and we obey Him out of love.
