guys- dmb added a 4th night to their red rocks shows...

it's a benefit show for hurricane relief funds.

btw, brittaney had a great time at the dave show... she would have liked to see #41, but she had fun anyway. and i should also let you all know that we've called off our relationship for now... it's a friendship. we're going to focus on God for now, and hopefully in the future something will work out.

Btw, i bought an Orchestra Baobab Cd. If you don't remember, they were the african band that Dave and Trey A. played with on VH1's Inside Out.

It's a really good cd.

Woah nice to see this thread up and running.

I am very, very busy with the wedding. I don't have much time for online forums, or online at all for that matter.

Just be praying for us guys. Only 17 more days, and we've hit more bumps along the way... but man it's been so much fun, and praise God, they've all worked out (everything form losing the female party of our duet, to our photographer having the wrong weekend  )

I promise you that I will have LOADS of picture to show when everything is said and done :D I'll create a HUGE thread and y'all can see this blushing bride on her wedding day (I told my photographer to make me look beautiful or I'll kill him ^_^ )

Okay - review time...I'll be as "brutally" honest as I can but concise...:D

Dreamgirl: Great opener - the chanting at the start sounds cool and I like the groove.
Old Dirt Hill: Still taking its time to grow on me - the synthesised drum beat doesn't really enchant me much and some of the backing vocals sound a bit "boy band-ish" in the chorus. I heard this in one of the record stores I was in yesterday and, had I not heard the clip earlier on in the week I'd have sworn it was a different band.
Stand Up: The guys sound like they're having heaps of fun - I think it sounds like an impromptu jam that they put on the album as the recording. End Roi solo is great, the riffs are very catchy - definitely one of my fave tracks.
AB Intro: Very interesting feel to it - I agree with Bryce that it would have made a great standalone track had it been longer. Carter's drums are particularly standing out for me.
AB: Love it, particularly the end jam.
Smooth Rider: I was so surprised at how short this song is - it's a great song with a nice bluesy driving beat and could do with some length. Dave sounds great on this.
Everybody Wake Up: Much better song than the snippets we heard on the first vid. I love the intro - sounds very mysterious with the strings and stuff. The drums sound more authentic in this than what I remember from the vid. Interesting sounding ending as well.
Out of my Hands: Sounds a bit U2ish - can't quite pick the song that it's similar to, but I like it - the stripped back feel of it really draws me in. Nice and simple.
Hello Again: For some reason I'm not really that enthusiastic about the intro's scatting, but the rest of it still sounds like we heard it last year. But the ending's pretty abrupt, which is a shame because a bit more jamming out would have been nice.
Louisiana Bayou: Nice song - the drum beat suits the song fairly well, even if it does sound a bit techno-ish. Musically it has a lot of nice attributes to it with the electric sound to it.
Stolen Away: Not bad - I think the synthesised drum beat takes a bit away from this. Sure it's a nice, laidback tune, but sounds too poppy with the beat it has.
You Might Die Trying: First verse sounds Jack Johnson-ish with the "power-sounding chords" and the rim shot. Has a great groove and a nice firm beat behind it. Uses Roi very well, I think - Boyd to a lesser extent...
Steady As We Go: I am crazy about this song!! The contrasting musical ideas in the verses and chorus are unexpected, but I think the key change works pretty well. Full band second half of the song will be adaptable for.
Hunger For the Great Light: Mixed feelings about the song - Stefan's opening riff sounds limp with whatever guitar sound he had and should have had a bit of distortion similar to what I can hear in the rest of the song. But the strings at the end remind me of the Last Stop reprise on BTCS - sounds beautiful, I have to say...

Verdict: Definitely not on par with BTCS or UTTAD, but a better album than the preview clips suggested. But in terms of comparisons to Everyday, I gotta wonder which is the least wise of decisions: Dave playing electric on Everyday or Carter being restrained on a few of the Stand Up songs. Whilst it's okay in places, the synthetic feel of the drum beats will be what I reckon will be remembered as Batson's "legacy". It's not bad, but as Bryce said in his posts, Carter needed to be heard more for what he is - and that's a brilliant drummer. Otherwise, Stand Up is a really good listen :) I shall award it 3 and a half stars out of 5...and my hands are freezing so I'll stop typing and warm them up!! :D

Had to revive our thread and quote my review for reflection purposes, since it's been almost 10 months and 2 tours since it was released.

To me, the live incarnations of these songs sort of dampened my enthusiasm a bit for the album as a whole. Songs like Bayou, AB Intro and Smooth Rider I love more because they've been built on and jammed up something nice (Robert Randolph on Red Rocks Bayou as a perfect example), not too crazy about SAWG as I was, and ODH has become my least fave DMB track by a mile. And Dreamgirl...well, had it remained at about 5 or so mins instead of the 10+ min thing that came up on many setlists, I might still like it. But now it just sounds uninspiring.

However, listening to live DMB helps me to relax as I struggle through reading psychology textbooks for a major project I have at uni this semster...:D Candice, I can't thank you enough for the gifts you gave me 2 years ago that have enabled me to appreciate music in this way!

I've never made it out to any of the Gorge shows, though I'd love to...just never have had the money. I've done road trips from here (Maryland) to the two shows outside of Pittsburgh the last 4 years though and camped inbetween the shows. They're always a lot of fun. This year money is really tight and I don't know if I'll make it to any shows...and with them playing in Charlottesville too that makes me really sad. :(

Ah, yes...the review! :)

Well, I got the chance to go to my first DMB concert on Sat night. Overall I was blown away with the setlist and the way in which the guys entertained us. It was 3 hours of awesomeness! Unfortunately I couldn't enjoy it from right up front because Lauren had banged up her knee pretty bad ice skating in the morning, but I did weave my way from my seat into the crowd a couple of times. The vantage point was pretty good in the end...Butch Taylor (their keyboard player) was blocked by the left speaker stack but I could see the rest of the band well.

Xavier Rudd (who was the support act) was magic!! I missed seeing him live last year because he had to pull out of a national tour due to illness, but his opening set more than made up for it - so much talent and I'm certainly going to check out some of his albums.

Crush: I almost missed the beginning of it since I was in the toilet, heard the screaming and cheering and ran back to my seat (they started 10 minutes earlier than expected). Great starter, the intro was nice, and a perfect opener.

Seek Up: Excellent!! I said a couple of nights ago that it wasn't one of my real faves, but after what I heard last night it certinly is now! Musical bliss for the main part, although Butch's solo sounded a little bit messy in places and his organ sound was a bit err...

Tripping Billies: Certainly unexpected - I was expecting something like Hunger to break up the long songs but Billies went off like a rocket! Boyd was great and danced around like he was on something. I got a camera phone vid of the whole song. Lauren said Billies was the song she most enjoyed.

Dreamgirl: Okay...I noticed a slightly steady stream of people heading for the bar/toilets. Stock standard version with nothing too great.

Jimi Thing: Went down the front for this one and really enjoyed it, even if Butch's scat was predictable and a bit too long. Pretty much what's been like for the past couple of years but it was fun.

Louisiana Bayou: Dave told a story before the song about what it was about. Energetic, and I didn't mind hearing it, although it felt a bit longish.

Sister: Never expected it midset. Out came the Taylor 714 (which Dave has tuned to raised B tuning and I thought it might be You Never Know until everyone else cleared the stage. Crowd was very appreciative, I think, and being the first time I'd heard Sister in full, I thought it was very sweet.

So Much to Say » ASTB » Too Much: ASTB was a highlight - the new horn bit is a vast improvement over the 04 style "bop bop..." thing and keeps it moving along nicely. However I continue to wish they hadn't slowed down the instrumental after the "little by little", cause it ruins the pace of the song. Really good though.

Dancing Nancies: Fabulous!! Standard lost in Paris lyrics, but Boyd was nuts! I really enjoyed his playing last night, and the jam was tight! I was hoping to hear Warehouse last night, and my hopes were up a lot when this came up, but...

The Maker: I don't know why this was the letdown song for me last night - I see myself as more of a fan of the licks and additions that Mitch Rutman brough to LiC, I guess. Sosunded good, but I didn't really get into it.

Still Water » Don't Drink the Water: When Dave invited XR out with his didgeridoo, it was obvious that we were going to get what we'd envisioned here. He was crouched down to Dave's right and really shone during this bit. I'm glad that the band tried it, because they all pulled it off sensationally - Still Water went for a good 4-5 mins, I think - at least 2 verses and the first verse again, a little musical interlude (where Dave danced around a little bit like you'd see with indigenous Australian dancing) then into DDTW. The didge mixed well and the power was just indescribable. At the end XR kept the drone going and Dave repeated the "And I live..." verse lightly. I'll stand by my comment that it was better than CP.

Down by the River: XR moved to slide guitar - didn't add a massive deal to it because of the acoustic undistorted sound. Not too bad otherwise.

Ants Marching: You can never knock Ants closing. And neither did the whole crowd. A+ and the inevitable standing ovation as we waited for the encore.

Gravedigger: I love the song, and was surprised yet very pleased to hear it. I was thinking that since the time was getting on a bit (it was at least 2 and a half hours, maybe 2 hrs 40 mins since the start of the show) that there'd just be a 2 song encore. I was up the front for it - same attentiveness as Sister shown and a rousing applause at the end.

American Baby Intro: Oh why the hell must Dave insist on imitating a thrash metal singer in this song??? The 2 or so mins where he did that I grimaced a fair bit. Otherwise it was pretty good, and I was trying to think of what would come next, since it seemed clear to me in my mind that while the tour started as a carbon copy of the Vegas shows, it wouldn't end as a carbon copy.

Stay (Wasting Time): I like the song, but as it ended, I was inching my way towards the doors so that we could beat the rush to the ticket paystations, since we had no intention of getting stuck in a carpark traffic jam. (we got out in a few minutes instead.)

So, all in all, a wonderful first show for sure! Highlights were for me Billies, the Still Water >> DDTW with XR, and just the simple fact that it was my first show! Although I did feel a little bit disappointed at first that because of Lauren's knee injury I couldn't be right up front, I got over it. There weren't any obnoxious spectators we were sitting, and generally the crowd was good, with the exception of a few smokers who lit up when the signs clearly said no smoking. I would have loved to hang around after the show to meet the guys but had to get away quickly, but that's okay.
