I thought this deserved it's own thread- it seems like it's going to be a pretty big deal this season so I think it's a pretty important topic.

I heard rumours about this "6" but I had no idea they would dive into it right in the first episode, I thought it would be something that would come out later in the season.

I am leaving work now but I'll have some time tonight to do some more research, I'll post anything interesting that I find.

In the meantime, thoughts? theories? unanswered questions (duh!) etc...?

I've had no time for research or reading the billion theories so far but I'm just going to post my speculative list. This has already changed from what I thought an hour ago lol:

  1. Jack
  2. Hurley
  3. Kate
  4. Locke - I think he gets off the island but against his own will. I'm willing to bet money that once he's back in reality he reverts to his paralytic state, gets depressed, perhaps commits suicide, and is the man in the coffin Jack goes to see
  5. Sun - I think the producers do want to use her pregnancy as a storyline. With that said in LOST time that would be waaaay far off since she is only a few months pregnant. I think she does get off the island to have her child. Possibly some people sacrifice themselves for her to do so
  6. Sawyer - This is the biggest grey area for me. But sometime in between current island time and the furthermost flash forward with Kate and Jack, those two have a huge falling out. I think this happened on the island and since it's pretty freaking obvious that she will end up with one of the two of them, Sawyer goes back with her somehow. This is partly the fangirl in me just hoping but I think it could happen

I'm pretty sure Sawyer will die before the show comes to an end.

I can just see him sacrificing himself for the greater good.

I can already picture the scene.

Sawyer is standing at the mouth of a cave, holding an enormous boulder in the air and urging Kate and friends to get out of the cave before it's too late.

Kate is screaming, saying that she won't leave, but then get's yanked out against her will.

Sawyer winks at her and says, "We'll always have the strawberries, Dimples!"

And then suddenly, Sawyer buckles under the pressure of the boulder and is crushed to smithereens.

I think it almost has to be Locke in the coffin, which would make him one of the Oceanic 6. Who else would Jack say was not friend nor family, but would also be so distraught over his death, even crying at the funeral home. I think those feelings come from guilt, that they screwed something up by leaving and this was just one result, this person who died, and it tore him up enough that he knows they have to go back.

Charlie told Hurley, "They need you", bringing Hurley to believe they have to go back. Hurley told Jack. Eventually Jack came to the same belief - maybe when the coffin-man died. Jack told Kate but she's not there yet. What will it take for Kate to come to believe they have to go back? And then, who will she tell?

I have grave doubts that Clair is one of the 'Oceanic 6' - her baby would be just a tad hard to explain.

I also doubt that Michael and Walt are part of the 'Oceanic 6' - though Michael is my number one candidate for the guy in the coffin in Jacks flashforward at the end of the last season.

What inerests me the most is the 'conspiracy of silence' bit surrounding the 'Oceanic 6'. It looks like they are being compelled to keep silent - but by whom, exactly? Is the oceanic 'unlimited flying' offer that Jack made such use of part of the bribe to keep quiet about what really happened? Who is the black guy that confronted Hurley? And notice the sarcasm of Anna Lucia's old partner - seems pretty obvious he wasn't buying whatever story the Oceanic Six (were told to?) put forth.

I do have a suspicion - way back when, the 'Lost Experience' online game the bad guys (Hanso) made mention of returning to the 'original' island for some project of theirs. The Hanso crew has a lot of pull...maybe enough pull to pressure other companies (and maybe at least some government types) into going along with a 'cover' story because of `national security'?

I also suspect the 'freighter people' are direct agents of Hanso corp, possibly seeking to re-establish a Dharma presence on the island. Given what went down with the 'purge' all those years ago, I can see where the return of Hanso/Dharma would make Ben very jumpy.

This is exactly what me and fatburger have been thinking... I really think it makes the most amount of [plausible] sense, and, based on everything I've read from Lindelof and Cuse, everything will have a plausible, believable answer.

what is this oceanic 6 thing all about? its totaly baffled me
It's a label the media has apparently given to 6 people from Oceanic Flight 815 after they get back home. We're assuming it is 6 people who are rescued in the flash forwards.

I think Clair has to be one of the 6. Otherwise, Charlie died for nothing.
I'm not sure. Desmond's vision was of Claire getting on a helicopter -- not necessarily getting off the island. It might be a red herring.

This is true... But I hate the thought of drowning and the thought that Charlie drowned just to say, "Not Penny's boat" makes me sick...

I actually think that the "Oceanic 6" will only be used in reference to the American survivors.

My vote's for Locke in the coffin.

When Kate says to Jack in the flashforward, "He'll be wondering where I've gone" (paraphrased) I think maybe that could mean another member of the 6. who else would she end up with? So my temporary guess is Sawyer and her stay together when they get back... buuuut who knows. I can also see Sawyer redeeming himself by sacrificing his life for the team on the island.

As of Episode 4.3 the 'Oceanic Six' stand at:

1) Jack

2) Kate

3) Hurley

4) Sayid

I'm not counting Ben because he wasn't on the plane. If Michael and Walt were forced to surface somehow they might round out the six...but I'm leaning towards the view that there were two sets of people that got off the island: the ones that were publically acknowleged (the six) and some others that were secretly removed.
