  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am a former Catholic. My wife is a former Catholic also. Our families are still Catholic. Every once in a while we have to go to a mass because of a wedding, baby christening,or funeral. I remember that right after the gospel reading everyone would recite the Nicene Creed. Lately when I had to go to a mass the Nicene Creed has been omitted. At first I thought it may have been due to time constraints at the wedding we were at, but other times & at other parishes it has been omitted also. I am wondering why?

Without knowing the particulars, I can guess at possibilities:
---The bishop of the particular diocese is not enforcing the celebration of Mass according to the rubrics;
---The clergy of the specific parishes are not adhering to the celebration of the Mass according to the rubrics; or
---The diocese in question has obtained some sort of indult from the Vatican to omit the Creed (highly unlikely, by the way).

If it really bothers you, you should probably ask one of the priests of one of the parishes where you have observed this.

Blessings,
----Wols.

Hey Wols -

Our priest will skip the Creed when he does a baptism after the homily. Althought this has concerned me I figured it was not a problem since we make a similar profession during the baptism.

Now other churches I've been to have baptised babies after mass as opposed to during the mass. Is this proper to do the baptism during mass and skip the Creed? Thats the only time we have ever skipped the Creed.

I have felt this is wrong but since I am new to the parish I haven't had the time to ask the priest.

Thoughts?

I suppose it could be the practice in some dioceses, or even an entire province, to omit the creed during extended services such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals, maybe to cut down on the time the service is taking up. I've never seen it done here, but that doesn't mean it's not a possibility elsewhere. There's also the possibility that there might be a liturgical regulation that I'm not aware of which permits this during extended services; I thought you were talking about regular morning Masses, not weddings and funerals.

Frankly, I've never been a big fan of scheduling baptisms during regular Masses. One parish I attended used to schedule as many as six babies at a regular morning Mass, which effectively added anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes to the Mass. I realize that idea behind this is to emphasize the community aspect of the parish, but it can also annoy a lot of people, especially those unfortunate souls who have to work on Sundays. Baptisms do not have to be scheduled during Mass, by the way----they can be scheduled right after Mass, or even at a totally different time, the way it used to be done way back when. Funerals and weddings, on the other hand, are a different matter. For Catholics in good standing who wish to have a Catholic service, Mass is part of the deal.

Blessings,
----Wols.

I am a former Catholic.

The three times I've seen it omitted was at a baby christening, a wedding, & recently a funeral. All at different parishes, in different dioceses. Those were the only times I've been in a Catholic church.

 Is it just me?

Some of these ancient, hoary old threads have been popping up lately, for some reason. I don't even know where they're coming from----they have to be from the old King's Tavern board, before the merger with CF.

They are coming up at the bottom of current threads in the 'Similar Threads' box. If you don't look at dates (and I didn't :D ) you can't really tell that they are ancient history. What threw me off was everybody's info box to the left. All that is current. :o *shrug*
