Chapter 10:
Beyond Faith: Mathematical Certainty
The New Covenant Church of Jesus Christ is under attack at the present time, just as it has been since the first century. However, a Christian friend of mine, who is a former pastor, once shared the idea that the Bible is like a lion. It can defend itself.
This chapter provides the absolute proof required to show our faith is not just another of the world’s many “religions”. All of those religions require that men and women attempt to do works in order to be worthy enough to go into the presence of the creator. Christianity is different in this regard. Our faith is about Grace. God sent His Son to do what we could not do for ourselves.
I did not become a believer based only on faith. Like C. S. Lewis, Josh McDowell, Lee Strobel and many others, I began believing the Bible was just a dusty old fairytale. However, after examining the Bible in detail I was faced with an undeniable truth that it had to have been written by a source outside of our dimension of space and time. There is absolutely no way it could have been written by human beings.
It has been said before and I will say it again. It is a love story written in Blood. This collection of 66 books recorded by about 40 different human authors is about Jesus Christ. He wrote it. (John 1:1, 14)
Pastor John Reisinger has compared the Bible to a 3 Act play.
Act 1: Someone is coming… (Old Testament)
Act 2: Someone is here… (Gospels)
Act 3: Someone is coming back… (Epistles)
Every believer in the modern world needs to understand we can prove our faith is the truth, based on the facts, with mathematical certainty.
In Genesis 3:15 God predicts an offspring (seed) of Eve will crush the head of the serpent. The whole Bible is the story of this one seed who is to come.
Can we prove this offspring really did come just as it was predicted thousands of years previously and recorded by Moses in the Book of Genesis?
In chapter 3 we traced the seed line that produced Jesus of Nazareth. How can we prove with mathematical certainty that He was the predicted Messiah from Genesis 3:15? All we need to do is examine the prophecies made hundreds or even thousands of years before His birth to see if He was the Messiah.
Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
We will start with His heel. Archeologists have dug up the bones of a person crucified by the Romans and have found an iron spike driven through the heel bone. Of all of the ways a person could be killed, what is the probability that the heel bone or even any of the foot would be involved in their death. Have you ever heard of a murder where the heel bone was ever mentioned in the case?
http://www.timesofisrael.com/in-a-stone-box-a-rare-trace-of-crucifixion/
Mic 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
Out of Bethlehem would come one who would be the “everlasting” ruler of Israel. What is the probability that of all the cities and towns in Israel He would be born in Bethlehem. If there were 100 cities and towns the probability would be one out of 100.
Zec 11:12 And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
Zec 11:13 And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.
Christ was betrayed by Judas for 30 pieces of silver, which were later returned because of the guilt Judas felt for what he had done. The silver was later used to buy the potter’s field. What is the probability the price of betrayal would be exactly 30 pieces of silver instead of 10 or 20 or some other amount and compound that probability with the second probability it would be used to buy not just any field, but the potter‘s field?
Gen_49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
The Messiah would have to come from the tribe of Judah. There were 12 tribes which descended from Jacob. Therefore, the probability would be one chance in 12.
Dan 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
Dan 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
Dan 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
For many years secular scholars claimed the Book of Daniel must have been written after the events occurred, because of the incredible accuracy of historical events described in the book. There was absolutely no doubt Alexander the Great and his generals were described in the book. Therefore, atheists had to assume it was written after the time of Alexander the Great. When the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered and analyzed, parts of the Book of Daniel were found proving it was written at the time Bible scholars had always believed, thus validating the truth of the Bible.
Daniel chapter 9 contains a precise timeline for the arrival of the Messiah and included the starting point of the timeline. Jesus of Nazareth was born and grew to manhood at the exact time predicted in Daniel chapter 9. Out of all the thousands of years of the history of Israel, what is the probability He would live during this exact time predicted in the Book of Daniel. I think you already know the answer to this question.
Mat 3:13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
Mat 3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
Mat 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
Mat 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
Mat 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Jesus of Nazareth was anointed as the Messiah by His Father from heaven, after His cousin John the Baptist placed Him in the waters of the Jordan River. This event occurred exactly at the time predicted by Daniel, hundreds of years before the event occurred.
The odds of anyone fulfilling all of the prophecies in the lifetime of one man are mathematically impossible, if it were not part of a divine plan. If you do not believe this, take these facts to a mathematician and have him do an unbiased analysis of the data.
Once I came to understand these facts I had to put aside my own selfish pride and accept the truth, because there was no other choice if I was going to be honest.
Jesus of Nazareth was and is the Son of God.
He did for me what I could not do for myself.
Through the baptism of the Holy Spirit, He has become a part of me and I have become a part of Him.
As a matter of fact, He is the only part of me worth anything.
It is my prayer that you can share the mathematical facts in this chapter with others, in order that they may also see the truth and become a part of the New Blood Covenant of Jesus Christ.
Amen.
