  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Someone else on this thread mentioned chants...what are they?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=SZjiYZNRQtE

That's one example of a chant- a song sung together at almost every service. The typical chants at a typical western liturgy are the Kyrie (the above), the Gloria in Excelsis, the Alleluia, the Sanctus and Benedictus, and the Agnus Dei. All very beautiful.

Here's another example of the Kyrie as actually sung during a Latin mass: http://youtube.com/watch?v=i4thjO2H5L8&mode=related&search=

Aw......I like to read you rambling. :)

At the moment I'm listening to Watermark...the purest place.
Been listening to it almost endlessly for weeks now. But I'm finding the songs very grounding. Does anyone else have that experience? When things seem to be piling up on me, I tend to drag out music that feeds my soul and listen to it over and over again...until I get the message. :)
How could I have missed this post!

That describes me to a "T". I play a new favorite cd over and over and over and over! When it's properly absorbed into my being, I place it tenderly into my favorites pile and find another one!

Ooh...since we're speaking classical...anybody else like to sit and listen to Vivaldi's Four Seasons? Over...and over...and over...:o :sorry:
Yes!

And Handel's Messiah is one my most played list.
Also Kutless.
And gregorian chants

Kind of eclectic! :)

I like the Messiah too. When I was in Bible School...eons ago...we did selections from it for our Christmas concert...so beautiful. :)

I like Handel's Messiah too.

Also the Carmina Burana (Carl Orff)

Appalachian Spring (Aaron Copeland)

Leonard Bernstein's Mass

Rhapsody in Blue (Gershwin)

Peter and the Wolf (Sergei Prokofiev) - one of the things I love about this is how the musical instruments represent the different characters

I've heard of them. I have some of their early music; one almost forgets that they didn't use instruments!

That's the thing that impresses me the most about them - they're amazing and it takes a while to realize that there is no accompaniment. I saw them live once - they're so versatile that if I weren't looking at them I'd have thought there were at least twice as many people singing.

The only other group I know to compare is Manhattan Transfer.

Two songs I have been obsessing over lately are actually secular songs. Are we discussing those as well? They both have very significant meanings to me right now.

I am pretty sure so. I am interested.Lisa

Ahh what the heck, I will post the lyrics anyway.

I have been having a lot of trouble with my oldest daughter, who is a very good girl who has been faltering lately. She is 17. Anyway, this song really describes her, IMO. It's really a pretty song, but I couldn't believe it when these lyrics put to music describe exactly what it seems my girl is going through.

Beautiful Disaster by Jon McLaughlin

She loves her mama's lemonade,
Hates the sound that goodbyes make.
She prays one day she'll find someone to need her.
She swears that there's no difference,
Between the lies and compliments.
It's all the same if everybody leaves her.

And every magazine tells her she's not good enough,
The pictures that she sees make her cry.

And she would change everything, everything just ask her.
Caught in the in between, a beautiful disaster,
And she just needs someone to take her home.

She's giving boys what they want, tries to act so nonchalant,
Afraid they'll see that she's lost her direction.
She never stays the same for long,
Assuming that she'll get it wrong.
Perfect only in her imperfection.

She's not a drama queen,
She doesn't want to feel this way, only seventeen but tired

She would change everything for happy ever after.
Caught in the in between, a beautiful disaster,
But she just needs someone to take her home.

Cuz she's just the way she is, but no ones told her that's ok.

And she would change everything, everything just ask her.
Caught in the in between of beautiful disaster,

And she would change everything for happy ever after.
Caught in the in between of beautiful disaster,

But she just needs someone to take her home
And she just needs someone to take her home.

The other song is Home by Daughtry. The reason I love this one is because my hubby is due home within a month from a 7 month deployment. No further explanation needed, I would assume ;)

Home by Daughtry

I'm staring out into the night,
Trying to hide the pain.
I'm going to the place where love
And feeling good don't ever cost a thing.
And the pain you feel's a different kind of pain.

Well I'm going home,
Back to the place where I belong,
And where your love has always been enough for me.
I'm not running from.
No, I think you got me all wrong.
I don't regret this life I chose for me.
But these places and these faces are getting old,
So I'm going home.
Well I'm going home.

The miles are getting longer, it seems,
The closer I get to you.
I've not always been the best man or friend for you.
But your love remains true.
And I don't know why.
You always seem to give me another try.

So I'm going home,
Back to the place where I belong,
And where your love has always been enough for me.
I'm not running from.
No, I think you got me all wrong.
I don't regret this life I chose for me.
But these places and these faces are getting old,

Be careful what you wish for,
'Cause you just might get it all.
You just might get it all,
And then some you don't want.
Be careful what you wish for,
'Cause you just might get it all.
You just might get it all, yeah.

Oh, well I'm going home,
Back to the place where I belong,
And where your love has always been enough for me.
I'm not running from.
No, I think you got me all wrong.
I don't regret this life I chose for me.
But these places and these faces are getting old.
I said these places and these faces are getting old,
So I'm going home.
I'm going home.

Hi there

So sorry to hear that your daughter is having some trouble lately. I will pray for her, ok?

And I absolutely LOVE that song Home. Did you know that Chris Daughtry is Christian and he actually wrote that song from a Christian perspective. It's God's love he's speaking of. I think it's neat. :)

I wanted to share the lyrics to a song I have been listening to. It's sung by Big Daddy Weave:

Audience of One

I come on my knees
To lay down before You
Bringing all that I am
Longing only to know You
Seeking Your face
And not only Your hand
I find You embracing me
Just as I am

And I lift these songs
To You and You alone
As I sing to You
In my praises make Your home

To my audience of One
You are Father, and You are Son
As Your spirit flows free,
Let it find within me
A heart that beats to praise You.
And now just to know You more
Has become my great reward
To see Your kingdom come
And Your will be done
I only desire to be Yours,
Lord

So what could I bring
To honor Your majesty
What song could I sing
That would move the heart of royalty
And all that I have
Is the life that You've given me
So Lord let me live for You
My song with humility

And Lord as the love song
Of my life is played
I have one desire
To bring glory to Your name

It repeats a few verses from there......this song is beautiful! :)

Excellent choice!

I also listen to Jars of Clay, and U2 for contemporary Christian music. I love Russian chant, and choral music in general. Josh Groban has an amazing voice that is also very nice to listen to.

As far as "secular" music, I grew up with the 60s & 70s stuff - the Beatles, James Taylor, early John Denver, classic rock. But I don't listen to that very often any more.

Oh I LOVE those songs too! I have Show Me Your Glory on my MP3 player and it's been repeating a lot lately! :D

I like the song In Christ Alone but I'm not sure who the female is that sings it...I know Brian Littrell has his version.

I will try to find out and post it here.
